The average poll samples just 1,000 people. Obviously, this poll will have a large margin of error, but for ~29% of people in the poll to say it, it means that it's likely a decent minority would actually say it. For example, if the average poll of 1000 as a +3/-3 margin of error, it's likely that a poll of 274 would have a much larger margin of error. Even if the margin of error was +20/-20, 9% of people would still be saying it...or 49% of people could be saying it. What I mean is that due to the fact that 29% of respondents said this, even with an extremely large margin of error, a significant chunk still likely said it.

Yes, thank you.

Undoubtedly they were strategy sessions on how to get Monsanto backing (ag issues in common) and go after Colorado environmentalists. Thankfully I was too young (but not by much) to get suckered into voting for Nighthorse Campbell. I actually do admire that Allard was a vet, but that's completely immaterial to his politics. At least Steve Johnson, his State Senate protege, supported Referendum C, a move I doubt Allard would have made.

Perhaps, but then you have the 46% of Mississippi Republicans who want to ban interracial marriage (50 years after Loving v. Virginia!) and $deity knows what else, waiting in the wings.

I bet I could find 79.46 Democrats with equally silly opinions if I looked hard enough. That's what 29% of the 274 people polled is, 79.46.

You're assuming that the pollster was specifically looking for the nutjobs, which rather contraindicates the point of scientific polling.

At least the sample is larger. Not much larger, though, 400 people out of 700,000+ Republican voters in the state. I'm sorry, but small polling samples like these are not significant enough to be ... significant.

A "scientific poll" would have sought a larger sample than 274.

Yes, thank you.

Exactly. This is how every poll works, and their is a science behind it. But whenever people do not like the results of a poll, they usually scream "But oh mer God! They didn't ask everybody! It's a small number of people! It's those people, not all! Hur de hur hur!"
There is a science behind it, and that is why every poll has a +/- margin of error.

The logic in the argument against this is essentially the same logic in the following argument.

Both ignore basic science and rely on ignorance.

The government in America can best be described with an analogy. The two political parties are two cats, the elite is a rat, power is the cheese, and the common people is the floor. The floor feels two cats can guard the cheese better than one. But the cats fight each other, and the rat makes off with the cheese in glee. The floor cannot leave, and soon both cats serve the rat, because the rat has the all powerful cheese, and gives the cats a small bit of it. So the floor gets crapped on by all three, as they eat the cheese together.

Well, to be fair, most GOP'ers get confused when they see both Obama and Satan, they think "wait a minute, this is a trick question. Everyone knows Satan and Obama are one and the same!"

Except Obama has the benefit of, you know, coming AFTER Bush, not BEFORE.

So, sometimes, those criticisms can be legitimate defences of Obama, such as when, Oh, I dunno... He is criticized for something he couldn't possibly control.
