Only gun I’ve ever fired was an M4, and I had a blast, so I guess that’s my favorite.

Not me, but the M4 was owned by my best mate’s father, who served as an Air Force mechanic in Desert Storm. I really enjoyed it, the gun just felt smoother than I thought t would, and I tied for first in terms of hit targets so it left a good impression of the gun on me.

The military isn't in the habit of selling soldiers their weapons. Likely you shot an AR built to look like an M4. My Bushmaster is one of them. I personally prefer the A1 or A2 look.

Minor correction: Desert Storm was in 1991, Iraqi Freedom was in 2003.

Quick way to tell the difference between an AR-15 and an M4/M16.

Is the person holding it in a military uniform?

If yes, it's an M4/M16. If no, it's an AR-15.
