First of all, that was the result of the anti-religious drive of the 1930s, which was instigated by Stalin, and then was completely reversed after WW2 (also by Stalin). After 1945, things got increasingly better for religion in the Soviet Union, and by the Brezhnev era the leader of the USSR was not opposed to having his picture taken with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. Secondly, even during the height of anti-religious persecution in the 1930s, the targets were senior clergy and church buildings, not the regular average Christian. Religion was always legal, and organized religious institutions were always allowed to operate, even though during some periods they were severely restricted in what they could do. The USSR restricted religion. It did not ban it.

No way to tell what the USSR would have done, since the big progress in the study of LBGT stuff happened largely after the fall of the USSR, but it seems reasonable to think that the USSR would have liberalized in that area along with the rest of the world.

Politically and culturally, the Russian Federation is extremely different from the Soviet Union. Post-Soviet Russia deliberately set about doing the opposite of what the Soviets were doing, on many issues. These days, Russia has immense economic inequality and a low flat tax, among other things.

They did keep the authoritarianism, though.

It's not leaching off the government, it's the government giving you the ability to make a living, in exchange, you produce material for it, and in exchange for that, you get free healthcare, subsidized housing, and your children get free education and heavily subsidized college.
