Bill O'Reilly Denies then Proves White Privilege

Ah, nothing says "The O'Reilly Factor" like opening up a segment with this:

"White Privilege: That is the subject of this evening's 'Talking Points Memo.'"

The Fox News host had a heated discussion with Megyn Kelly Monday night about the concept of "white privilege," during which Kelly defended the idea and the evidence that supports its existence. But apparently O'Reilly still wasn't convinced, because he was back at it Tuesday night with another important announcement.

"Talking Points does not, does not, believe in white privilege," he said.

In case you didn't catch that one, don't worry, here it is written out for you:

O'Reilly went on to drop some statistics about unemployment and how Asian Americans have a lower unemployment rate than White Americans so really we should be talking about "Asian privilege."

"There is no question that African-Americans have a much harder time succeeding in our society," he argued. "Even whites do. But the primary reason is not skin color. It's education and not only book learning."

O'Reilly has been talking about the idea of white privilege for months now, denying that it's real but also making it known that he is "exempt" from white privilege because he once worked in an ice cream shop.

I am sick of white males denying the fact that white privilege exists. As a white male, it is disturbing that so many of us, are unable to get a grip with reality that white privilege is a major problem in today's society. Do you think white privilege is a big problem and how do we get rid of it?

To get this out of the way: O'reilly doesn't believe in Asian Privelage, obviously. It was just to prove a point.

I really don't believe White Privilege is a big problem today. The problem is less that Whites get more privileges than other ethnic groups, but that a selection of ethnic groups get discriminated against in specific areas. Hispanics will occasionally get glared at near the border and Blacks will occasionally get discriminated against in parts of the South, but Blacks are usually treated equally in SoCal and Hispanics are usually treated normally in the South. However, calling this "White Privilege" suggests that Whites everywhere in the US discriminate against all other races, which isn't true. These days, no one other than the extremely racist believe that Whites are inherently better than all other races/ethnicities and should be given more privileges. The problem is lingering stereotypical views against specific ethnicities in specific areas. In that sense, I think O'reilly is right.

There's absolutely historical white privilege in the sense that whites had more rights under the law than blacks (at least in America). However, historically, there are often major disparities between groups. Malaysia is a great example. The ethnic Chinese, who make up a tiny percentage of the population, own most of Malaysia's capital despite facing unfair laws and being a tiny minority. However, they came in poor and worked into riches.

The disparities between whites and blacks and Asians might be less sinister than you think. I recommend this speech that Thomas Sowell, a noted black economist, gave a while back. It's a historical look at disparities. Quite good.

Privilege isn't a thing, only advantage. They're not the same. Whiteness as such is essentially an advantage in America, and that advantage, like all advantages, must be ceded. But that doesn't make it reasonable to talk about what you're "sick of white males doing."
What's the difference? To have an advantage is to have a greater degree of power, whether economic, political, or social. Privilege is a posited moral effect which makes those who have advantages worse and less valuable people. When it goes along with assumption, which it almost always does, it makes anyone who even looks like they might have been offered an advantage at some point worse and less valuable people. Privilege says that you can stereotype an entire group of people, dislike them, oppose them at every turn, and do everything that you condemn when done by others, so long as you target members of the beneficiary class. Privilege says that people who happen to be born with the wrong sex or orientation or skin color are inferior people; in other words, privilege refers to people, advantage to situations. Advantage simply states that there is a wrong which must be rectified.

I just can't sit and watch it for more than 10 minutes. It's infuriating that a news channel can so brazenly lie and distort the facts and get away with that. Maybe it's an American thing.
