That's not exactly a safety net because it's not working.

I think it is interesting the party is named after Mr. Palmer himself.

Even if there was a legitimate reason to fear a "chinese invasion", I really doubt that the Australian people need to be worried because the USA has their back. What with the recent agreement to base hundreds if not thousands of American troops in the north of their country, I doubt very much that China is even considering Australia given the strong deterrent.

Further, as an American, I think the Australians should do what the Europeans did during the cold war. Instead of engaging in militaristic arms buildup, they should focus their attention on building their economy and trying to become one the top economic powers in the Asia/Pacific region. Germany and Japan have both shown that this strategy tends to work better. Because of the US presence in their countries, Germany, Japan, South Korea, the UK and France were all able to focus most of their energies on economic growth.

Australia's goal should not be to seek military conflict against China but rather to try and develop an economy that rivals or surpasses both China's and Japan's in the region.

As an Aussie, I would like to say that Palmer's only reason for being in parliament is money, Australia should never trust America the way it is now, and that Palmer is an idiot, who knows nothing of how the world works
Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing

They're saying they're not going to invade now, but wait and see when they do. Also, the news video and accompanying article seemed extremely biased.

The aggressive slur on Australia’s biggest trading partner followed her PUP leader Clive Palmer’s racist rant in which he called the Chinese government “mongrels” who kill their own people.

Reminds me of something we have here in America...MSNB -- ...nah!

you are defending a fringe political party that is named and solely funded by a single billionaire who is known for making outlandish political statements. There is no validity to this invasion talk, China doesn't even have the kind of military that could pull off a thousand + mile oceanic crossing to invade Australia, and they aren't stocked full of long range bombers ore commerce destroying submarines either. Furthermore, the attempt would put them in a state of de facto war with Britain, Canada, United States, and Japan, which basically puts them on a war footing with all of their major economic partners at once.

How would that even work? Does China even have a navy capable of mounting such a large invasion. Australia is very big and pretty far away.

No, we just paid for Europe's ability to build affluent, leftist nations that could safely enjoy having weak (and thus cheap) militaries.

Scandinavian "Paradises" exist because of U.S. defense dollars.

The U.S. gets blamed for so much, but who's the one really footing the bill for Europe's, South Korea's, and Japan's defense?

We have a savior-of-the-world complex, and the rest of the world likes it.
The other Grantican nation is Grantica.

This is the dark timeline Grantica of draconian evil.

The other one is filled with people who actually care about things other than power and oppression.

Some might say we are alike, but that's not true.

Indeed, the US is what is behind the Scandinavian Paradises as they don't have to spend as much on defense save for Finland which is flanked by Russia on one side. Russia's a power in it's own right.

Australia's nice and all, and I like their people, but why would China possibly want to invade Australia? It's an arid, barren place with only small portions of it capable of supporting any substantial population. I seriously doubt the Chairman is going to wake up some day and go "You know, I think I'd really like Australia to be part of China. Just cause it would look nice on a map."

Perhaps if you still live in the 70s. That's old news and the Cold War for you. We built up other countries and wastes our money on military while they built their economies. Now, the US does nothing but be a military power, and our economy is nothing more than one massive consumer base.

Quite an outlandish claim.

"Footing"....you mean "footed". Anything we supply them with still is unnecessary.

No, no they don't. Calm down, Liberty Prime.

France is still the third largest nuclear power in the world and fairly powerful militarily, and I'm certain we'd just see a sudden surge in militarisation in Europe rather than Russia suddenly conquering Europe. Certainly, Russia might be more powerful, but it wouldn't just conquer Europe flat out.

EDIT: I'd also like the add that the situation in Europe benefits the USA too. If it were to suddenly close all its bases in Europe or European territories, it would lose a helluva lot of projection power, and probably couldn't be considered a super-power anymore.
