The problem is that the GM issues are also a bit of user error given that one puts too many keys on a keyring and it will cause ignition issues no matter what car it is.

My Ford's been real good to me. It's not too bad on gas for a truck, it's got more than enough power for what I use it for, and the oil filter is in such a convenient place.

A Ford Mercury? Is that like a General Motors Chevrolet? It's just a Mercury, it is a brand, not a model of ford. I'm assuming, based off your description of it as a boat, that it is a 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis. Glorious and comfortable car, if a bit slow.

I was under the impression that Mercury is a line of cars from Ford... Anyway, this one has the same engine as a Mustang, IIRC (the car's not mine but belongs to my father-in-law) and when it goes, it really goes.

Mercury was a brand under the umbrella of the Ford Motor Company, but calling it a Ford Mercury is like saying a 'Ford Lincoln', 'General Motors Cadillac', or a 'Volkswagen Audi', or a 'Toyota Lexus' etc. It's not correct.

If it has the HO 302 from the Mustang GT (as my Mark VII does) then it would have 225 horsepower. However, Grand Marquis were never sold with the HO 302, they were always sold with the low-ouput 302 (shared with the LTD, pickups trucks, vans, and the Town Car) that had 140 or 150 horsepower. If it had the Mustang/Continental/Mark VII/Police Interceptor engine, it was put in aftermarket.

Oddly enough when I was first buying a caliber I looked at a colbalt as well. But stoage capacity wasa concern for me, and while the trunk itself was large the actual opening left something to be desired as far as getting larger items in the vehicle.Other than that I thought the Cobalt was a fine vehicle.... just lost out to the sport-wagon and overall storage capacity of the Caliber for me at the time.

Completely agreed. American cars are often unreliable, unsafe, and they're recalled all the damn time.

The caliber I currently own is my 2nd Dodge Caliber.... the first one came to an end when I was stuck in traffic on the interstate on the way to a service call and some ninny on a cellphone plowed into the back of my while going about 55-60 and I was at a standstill.... not only did I walk away with out narry a scratch.... I was able to drive the Caliber to the collision center. The frame damage to it is what totalled it though. As such it is of no surprise that I replaced it with another Caliber.

Their pickups are fine, actually. Most American brands are fine when it comes to pickups, it's cars where GM falls short.

This is Greenberg! I bought him on Friday after total brake failure in my other car, coupled by a slipping transmission and severe electrical problems. Greenberg is a 2005 Honda Civic EX Special Edition. He is in perfect condition aside from a bad motor in the passenger window, but it still works pretty well. Sunroooooooof.

American brands are generally pretty reliable, from my experience.

Then again, we get most of ours manufactured in Ontario, so maybe the quality control is higher in those plants than the ones in the States.

I have a 1962 Morris Minor Convertible in black with a red coachline. I've customised it too, fitted a Rover 3.5 ltr V8 after many attempts, changed the gearbox and I'm in the process of making the roof electric. Looks a lot like this, only with a red roof.
