The one question that I just can't answer is why Daesh is going out of its way to appear pure evil. I mean, we live in the age of media wars, when most factions in most wars try as best they can to appear good and righteous and peace-loving to the outside world.

But Daesh is like, "fuck that, let's torture and murder people on camera, let's openly promote rape and slavery - bring on the cartoonish supervillainy!"

Why? Why are they so enthusiastically trying to look evil? I just can't explain it.

Daesh has attracted a lot of the young and uneducated energetic ones, they are not like Al Qaeda or the Muslim Brotherhood whose actions tend to coincide with grand strategic goals. This is one reason why Al Qaeda did not want AQ of Iraq in Syria, they ignored it and went rogue, they screwed one of Al Qaeda's grand plans which is to unite only when independent muslim emirates agree to unite, not by massive blitzkgrieg like Daesh is doing and massacring everyone. Al Qaeda also lost a lot of its foot soldiers and ground associates to Daesh because of the adrenaline rush and the shock of an Islamic Caliphate actually being born. Its really the Al Qaeda leadership that was intelligent, Baghdad is an idiot. Daesh may have the tech, individual smart guys who are good at computers or regular fighting but they are idiots on a strategic scale. So to continue answering your question, Daesh hit the Jihadist nerve core and taking it to a whole new level by implementing much of what was historically said among Jihadist scholars, but they did it way too early which is going to be the result of their downfall. Unless Daesh is going be effective at constantly opening up new major fronts in Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, the Gulf, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, maybe get their hands on Pakistani nukes they are going to collapse.

Same reason other people have done it throughout history. To make people surrender without having to fight. What they forgot is that in the times it worked, was when they'd also show incredible amounts of mercy, humility, and respect to those who surrendered.

When you fail to do that, well...you tend to get people fighting to the death.

The things they do are "evil" only in the eyes of their enemies (and their victims, but this should go without saying). As shocking as it may be for us of secular or moderate faith/ideology/belief/whatever, there are some people who can actually wake up in the morning and justify this kind of savagery - either because they slid down the slippery slopes of justification their ideology laid before them have or because they're just sociopathic monsters who would've raped and murdered anyway in a state where there's no authority to stop them.
