Flesh out your OP.

Anyway, it is clearly Andrew Buchanan. No president, not even Andrew Jackson, was this bad. Buchanan waffled on secession and literally watched the Union tear itself apart.

Generally in an OP, you give your opinion as part of the opening debate. However, I don't think you would have to dig far to find a thread just like this one in the pages of the General Forum.

My vote, Andrew Jackson, for betraying the Cherokee. The Cherokee (under the command of John Coffee) saved his ass at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Not to mention his disregard of the Supreme Court decision in Worcester v. Georgia. I wish Lawrence would have invested in better pistols before attacking him. He sure in hell doesn't belong on US currency, but that's my opinion.

Definitely Andrew Johnson, the impeached president who delayed Republican efforts to give freed slaves basic civil rights and ignored slave-like conditions black people still faced after the Civil War.

Lincoln is among the worst for his countless violations of the Constitution.

And, one could argue he is partly responsible for the death of 600,000 Americans.
"Maybe it’s not the politicians who suck; maybe it’s something else. Like the public. That would be a nice realistic campaign slogan for somebody: “The public sucks. F*ck hope.” Put the blame where it belongs: on the people. Because if everything is really the fault of politicians, where are all the bright, honest, intelligent Americans who are ready to step in and replace them? Truth is, we don’t have people like that. Everyone’s at the mall, scratching his balls and buying sneakers with lights in them."

James Buchanan, he watched the Union fall apart. At least Nixon knew to leave when he was doing more bad than good (granted it was because he was caught).

I almost voted for O, but I settled on Shrub. Despite Obama's many flaws, they're mostly continuations of Bush's steamy ones.

My vote goes to Lincoln for:

Suppressing Press Freedom
Arresting Journalists
Suspending Habeas Corpus
Forcing Conscription
Starting Civil War.

Look, anyone saying Nixon, Carter, Obama, or even Bush is just dead wrong. Arch sums it up very nicely.
The Archregimancy wrote:Anyone who names any post-WWII president as the "worst" or "best" is historically illiterate; and that includes George Bush Jr., who whatever his undoubted faults never stood by while a significant portion of his country moved towards secession, launching an internal civil war leading to the deaths of several hundred thousand of his own people.

So that would be James Buchanan, then; no US president has been so close to overseeing the literal destruction of his own nation. And it's not as if Buchanan wasn't aware of what was going on; he actively ignored direct advice in 1860 that Lincoln's election would likely lead to secession because General Winfield Scott - then head of the US Army - was a long-time political opponent of the president's, and then weakly countermanded his own order to reinforce army forts in the South following Lincoln's election. His final policy on secession was that it was illegal for the South to secede, but illegal for the Federal Government to stop them trying, which was as disastrously inept an approach as he could have conceived.

Given than his stated primary goal as president-elect was "to destroy sectional party, North or South, and to restore harmony to the Union under a national and conservative government", Buchanan was an abject failure at almost any measure.

Buchanan even oversaw an economic crisis (the Panic of 1857) caused by excessive extension of credit, and triggered when a financial company with large mortgage holdings was revealed to be engaging in fraudulent financial practices - so it's not even as if Bush Jr. has an international credit-based financial crisis over Buchanan. "...the years immediately preceding the Panic of 1857 were prosperous [and] many banks, merchants, and farmers had seized the opportunity to take risks with their investments ... [A]s soon as market prices began to fall, they quickly began to experience the effects of financial panic."

Andrew Johnson, Franklin Pierce, and Warren G. Harding likely deserve the odd vote too; but none quite measure up to Buchanan.

Shame Buchanan was also likely the USA's only gay president; LGBT Americans would likely prefer to have had a better role model in the Oval Office.

Five people legitimately thought the Abraham Lincoln was the worst U.S. President!? How!? Honest Abe was awesome!

And he kept the Union together, so I guess if you hate 'Murica you would hate Abe.

Uh, no. You clearly don't know what treason is, and are ignorant of the fact that waging a Civil War was completely unnecessary and unconstitutional. And you've bought into a completely asinine stereotype to belittle an entire group of people with no facts to back you up.

Nice job.
