I'm not sure what's worse, current Congressional gridlock or the thought of a single house that also plays a major role in who heads the executive branch.

The distinction between executive and legislative is very small in the Westminster system. They're extremely intertwined, so one choosing the other is a natural conclusion from that.

The first noted use of it was by a scot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Britain when he inherited the crowns of England and Wales. The Isle of Great Britain was called so before the UK was formed, Maybe they named it the same thing to spite seperatists I wasn't in the room at the time and frankly neither were you. They named the country after what it included, the only example you've given to contradict this is Ireland which isn't really related to the UK government in any way and actually actively avoids being so. Did the USA get named so that they could claim the entirety of America? Maybe the EU some day wants to absorb Russia? just the European bit though, they didn't think far enough ahead to call themselves the Eurasian Union! Now they have no claim on it!

Because there are plenty of other kingdoms around? It was fairly common in the 19th century to just refer to us as "The Kingdom" though.

And I wouldn't unite with Russia now because it's not Democratic, The EU however and in case you want a more complete list, Canada, the US, Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, Canada, Japan, India, Taiwan, New Zealand, Chile, South Korea... not an exhaustive list but you get the picture, would require a lot of working out and logistically would be pretty tricky but I would not be opposed to a greater democratic union.

How is the vote counted? Is it taken like an election, the straight majority, or are they doing 50%+1?
Now, I understand one vote determining everything is wildly unlikely, but just in case, what do they choose in a tie? Is the default noes? Yeses? Unanswered questions going on here, perhaps they could ask the Queen.

Its a straight majority, even if there was one vote either way that would swing the election. There also not allowed to recount on the basis of "the referendum is close"; whilst this is unlikely if No wins by 50 votes Yes Scotland won't be allowed to ask for a recount unless it genuinely looks like there's been a mistake. In the unlikely event of being completely tied, and I'm not making this up. Coin Toss.

Someone in Canada's come up with a benchmarks table for what Yes needs in each council area (obviously if it does better in one it can afford an under par perfomance in another) to win. Interesting, anyway.

Ah, hang on. This is based on the SNP vote in recent elections. It's therefore probably bollocks. I thought it was a bit odd that the benchmark is lower for Glasgow than Midlothian or Perthshire.

That would fit with the theory that the No voters were more determined to vote as has been suggested. Not good for them if an area expected to be a big win for Yes has a relatively low turnout.

Alex Salmond has done all of this and people are still voting for him, because of his tactics - preying on Scots, making them feel guilty about voting No, and rekindling misguided patriotism. He could say that Scotland would be guaranteed a place on the Security Council and free pounds will fall from the top of Ben Nevis every Tuesday and Thursday weather-permitting, and no one would challenge it, because "it's a time for change".

People are voting Salmond because the man has a terrifying ability to catch-up at the last minute as a result of injecting wild levels of fervour into his campaigns. He did this in 2011, and has managed to renege on most of his policy pledges since then. Look at the NHS. He has essentially followed the Coalition's line on spending and mimicked the reorganisations while vigourously attacking Westminster. Oh, by the way, all of the post-independence policies have changed - five years ago iScotland was going to be totally nuclear free in five years flat (?!?), out of Nato, on the euro, without the Queen, without any SDF to speak of, not that the present proposals are something to speak of...the list goes on.

Also, the RAF and the Navy are unlikely to be keen on yielding so much as a jet trainer or a dinghy at the moment. i.e. Salmond will not get any of his demands, from Defence, to Currency, to Debt, to the World Stage.

As far as my post about this earlier is concerned, I have spoken to the person in question, and it was a council election not a parliamentary one, but yes, it happens. In the 1800s, the returning officer could cast a deciding ballot if there was a tie, IIRC.
