The European response to the Ukraine Civil War is predicated on the fact that if Ukraine were allowed to break up, it would bode ill for the rest of Europe. Many of the NATO governments are contending with break away ethnic groups seeking independence for their lands and people.
If the European response to Ukraine is any indication, then the Western European response to seccessionism will indeed by bloody and brutal.
Wikipedia has a long list of secessionist movements in Europe the majority of whome have legitimate and credible aspirations of regaining their independence.

Of all the nations of Western Europe, it appears that only the UK is willing to let a province, Scotland, leave peacefully. Spain has indicated it would use lethal force against the Basques if they approved independence in a referendum to held in that province by the end of this year.
France has indicated likewise.
While the UK could very well be an exception, the fact is that continental Europe is fracturing at the seams.
In Belgium there are three ethnic groups seeking either independence or to join the neighboring states of France or Germany. Just as ethnic Russians in Ukraine have chosen to become independent then seek to join with Russia.
In the Czech Republic both the Moravians and the Silesians are beginning to demand independence.
The Faroe Islands are seeking independence from Denmark.
The Basques are seeking independence from both France and Spain.
In addition Brittany, Catalonia, Savoy, and the people of the island of Corsica are all seeking independence from France and the Russian people sympathize their plight.
In Germany the people of Bavaria, Lusatia, and East Frisia are all demanding more autonomy and independence. Perhaps Russia should lend them economic assistance.
The people's of both Sardinia and Sicily have rightfully decided they no longer wish to be affiliated with Italy so why should the world force them, at gun point, to do so?
Not to mention there has been talk that Venice wants its independence back.
The Polish regions of Lithuania wish to leave Lithuania and reunite with Poland. They should be allowed to do so.
Of course the Silessians want independence from Poland just as they want independence from the Czech Republic. To force them to remain the divided slaves of two western imperialist regimes is a grave injustice.
The Azores are seeking independence from Portugal and it should be Russian policy to support their aspirations in return for an Atlantic naval base for the Russian navy who would provice security for the new nation and ensure that NATO does not try to invade and reenslave them.
In Spain Aragon and Andalusia join the Baques and many other provinces in demanding independence from Spanish tyranny.
Besides Scotland there are many other provinces and territories seeking independence from the UK.
Nationalism is not just confined to Slavs or Russians. It is rampant through out Europe. The people of Ukraine had a chance to resolve their differences with their Russians citizens peacefully but instead chose Nazism and lethal force against defenseless and unarmed civilians. It is this model that the governments of the EU have chosen to support.
Russia is not just an innocent bystander. Unlike Europe, Russia is not weak and will not be breaking up into pieces any time soon. Also, because Russia is the second strongest nation on earth, the arrogant governments of the west were surprised when Russia defended the human rights of Russian ethnic groups in Georgia and in Ukraine and in Moldova.
Recently Russian warplanes were spotted right off the coast of most NATO countries. This is not a precursor to invasion but intended to put the Europeans governments on notice that if NATO acts militarily in Ukraine against the Russian minority groups, Russia is ready and able to hit back at all the capitals of Europe and there is little Europe can do except whine to the Americans to come and save them.
But the real problem with Europe's anti slavism is that it is hypocritical attempt to cover up the fact their own nations are beginning to fracture and have been fracturing for some time in certain cases such as the Basques.
