Origen of Alexandria, a brilliant scholar and Father of the early church, said that there were four levels of interpretation for a scriptural passage. The goal of the exegete is to find the original intention of the author and use that to explain the passage; discovering the intended level of interpretation will aid this process.

Those four levels were the literal, the allegorical, the moral, and the spiritual. So, if the exegete is offended at the possibility of taking the account of Elisha making an axehead float up out of the water as literal truth, he can accept it on one of the other three levels. Perhaps it is a fable with a moral: Help comes in unexpected ways for those who trust the Almighty. Perhaps it is spiritual: When you feel burdened with the weight of the world, the Almighty can buoy you up.

This way, there is always some kind of truth there for us.
