As a Catholic, we believe that the Bible was created using divine inspiration from God, but it was copied down by fallible men, so there will always be mistakes.

And, most theologians believe that to be true, so thank you for not being naive enough to believe that everything in the bible is true.

Why would an omnipotent being allow for mortal mistakes. Especially one as big as the earth being only a few thousand years old.

Yeah but then why influence these mortals in the first place? And why would free will have to do with making a perfect copy of the bible.

God didn't seem to put much in stock with free will in the old testament. For that matter, he doesn't seem to put much stock in it with the new testament.

6000 is not exactly in the Bible, what someone did was take in all the begots and the ages of the people in the bible up till Jesus and somehow calculate the how long it had been since adam and eve.

Oh William Ussher, to be fair he was an intellectual using information known at the time. Had he had the full vast amount we do today it would be different.

Because the Christian God (generally) want to guide his children towards good, and thus use His influence from time to time to do so (and to smite his enemies sometimes). However, controlling mortals to write exactly what he wants them to write down would violate Free Will, which He is apparently quite like about humanity in the first place.

Again he didn't seem to have a problem with controlling mortals in the old testament. You are aware he deliberately hardened pharaoh's heart in the exodus, right?

Well, the Old Testament and the New Testament tend to contradict with each other so much that some suggest they are different gods. :p
The reality is probably because New Testament is based on what would be considered a heretic sect of Judaism (where the Old Testament comes from), so it is like a massively popular fanon of a work that contradicts the canon, but is so deeply-rooted that people just do not pay much attention to it.

Considering the whole basis of the new testament is in one happened in the old testament, the contradictions are pretty much a death blow to the new testament.

Well, being followed by more people than any other books in the world kind of makes it alive and well, though. Again, it is like a massively popular fanon that has surpassed the canon to the point that people no longer mind about that.

And yet they still claim the same God. Sigh Some consistency in claims might be nice...

Maybe, but every fan community in the world tend to function otherwise. :p You should know it when fanon starts to develop character traits to characters that are given different characterisation.

I know. It's just, you would think if they were inspired by god they wouldn't mess it up so badly.

The main difference between fanons and religions is that the fans realize that it's not real however much they want it to be while religions don't. :P
