Cats can be peculiar like that. If you haven't lived at your current place for long, it might actually be that cat's previous house. But that's probably not it. Does the animal seem to be a stray?
It doesn't have a collar, but then I've spotted about two or three other cats in the area and none of them have collars, either. The same with my old place - none of the cats that walked through our back garden had collars.
I suspect it might belong to the people next door, as it seems to spend a fair amount of its time dozing on their door mat.
