Find an unclaimed patch of land with lot of untapped oil beneath it. Contact US companies and say that you will give them unrestricted access to the oil and no regulations in return for being dictator and enough money to establish a community there. Choose only close friends and relatives when establishing your community and share out the oil money more or less evenly between them. Then write a constitution that a) proclaims you dictator for life with the power to choose your successor, b) gives the oil companies generous concessions, c) included a generous welfare package funded by oil money. Finally, hire mercenaries, open to the borders to anyone willing to come and work, and start buying up nearby land. You'll do fine until the oil starts to run out or the mercenary captain decides to organize a coup.

I'm doing that, organizing a trip to Mars, establishing a colony there, continuously give the colony resources until it can supply itself, move to the colony, once the oil runs out sell the land to the US.

I think what he's done is fairly ludicrous, and is sending the wrong message to his daughter. What it is teaching her is that if you want something so bad, no matter how unrealistic, you can get it. Unfortunately life doesn't work that way, and it may set her up for major disappointments down the road. I'm not saying people shouldn't strive for things in their lives - a new car, to stop smoking, etc. - but to become something she wasn't - a princess - is just overboard, IMHO.

This girl will move past this "princess" phase in her life and when she's matured, I think even the "princess" will realize that this was outlandish, and has transformed her entire family's life just to satiate her desire to be again, something she wasn't.

And obviously, nobody is going to recognize this claim to territory. Well, maybe Sealand.

You're not the only one, actually. I agree with you - as fantastic and ambitious this venture is, in the end it is, sorry to say, ridiculous. I doubt that anyone in the international community would be interested in recognizing the rule of a single family over a territory consisting of a barren desert and not even a single permanent resident. There are no settlements there, no military, no economy to sustain this "country" - and even the Bedouins there are nomads. They just keep moving. Ultimately, I believe that this is just a little bit more useful and has barely more impact on the wider world than some imaginary country established in the Internet and claiming territories ranging from the deserts of New Mexico to the City of London to some random spot on the Moon and equally-imaginary mountains on Pluto.

Sealand is actually more realistic; it doesn't claim the entirety of an empty, uninhabited (except by nomads) desert, it just claims sovereignty over a single, artificial WWII installation with some fifty people as its "citizens". As laughable as it seems, it was willing to issue a constitution, it makes stamps, passports, and coins, it has a national anthem (which was once recorded by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra). People actually play for its sports teams.

I don't mean to be harsh to the father and daughter - the father is a genuinely well-meaning man, but he has gone too far. He's already attracted the attention of the media. Will the international community actually pay attention to him? He's only embarrassing himself.

The Bedouins there, I believe, will continue their customs and traditions as if nothing there has happened. I doubt they have actually heard of this whole thing.

Couldn't agree more with you with everything you too have written, thank you.

And yes, the dad is well intentioned - he wants to show he will do anything for his child, and clearly what he's done/doing is out of love. But, I think, as noted, it's severely misguided and is not good for his daughter. Will she hold herself up on a pedestal now against her peers? God knows...

But then again, it's not legal because of some silly thing that demands that only Egypt and Sudan should be claiming either piece of land, and that the two countries must choose one and solve it amongst themselves.

Sweet, but legally not binding. Though I don't think anyone minds, yet. :)

So does this mean that anyone living in that small piece of land has to bow down to a 7-year-old? (kidding)

Eh, I'm sure he wasn't being serious about it. Just to make his daughter happy. That girl will eventually realize that it's all fake and then blame her dad for all her problems then stomp up to her room and lock herself in it.

It is a kind and generous gesture to his daughter, and i salute him for it, and the land was unclaimed, due to Sudan claimed it to be Egypt's and Egypt claimed it to be Sudan's so neither claimed it, so unless one of them now automatically claim it, i doubt one of those issues would arise, but then again, they may continue claiming it to belong to the other, and not that guy.

For what it's worth, I recognize the Kingdom of North Sudan.

That said, good luck getting recognition from your neighbors. I'd imagine the first step would be to see if any one owns the land. If there are no owners, go and move in. Then, you will have a population, which is important for claims like this.

Anyone here into micronations?
