If you're conservative you vote Republican and if you're liberal you vote Democrat. This is how it has been in America since forever.

Actually it's only been this way since about 1910 in the north and the 1960's in the south.

Now, in answering the question, I do believe that the American media, and the cable networks in particular, are one of the biggest contributors to the increasing polarisation and hostility that left and right have for each other in America, as well as to the increased ostricisation of anything within the centre.

While a good point, I'd say that the problem is more commentators than actual reporters. The problem is, the commentators get the highest ratings so instead of actual journalism we get op-eds in the most key timeslots.

Less pundits, more straight-shooting journalists, and we'd have less polarization IMO.

If you're conservative you vote Republican and if you're liberal you vote Democrat. This is how it has been in America since forever. I'd say there are plenty of leftist organizations in the US. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and Weather Underground for example. These were so radically to the left as to be Marxist.

Maybe if you believe in American Politics. In American terms, "liberal" is a vague as hell term that means anyone not a Republican, and "conservative" means far-right.

And not forever, at all. In fact, there were times where America was radically different in politics.

Please realize I said "party or media....mainstream America". The Republicans and Democrats are both rightist parties, because American Politics is shifted right. The "independents", or so-called "centrists" are center rightists. The SDS and Weather Underground are organizations that were small and not well known in the modern world until Fox News decided to bring on that guy who was a former member, to expose "left-wing terrorism", which has been dead in America for quiet a while now.
