Catholic Discussion Thread

Postby Esponnise » Fri Jul 11, 2014 11:02 am

Hello everyone! This is a thread inspired by the popular Christian Discussion Threads, but this is specifically for discussing the Catholic Church. This is for discussing Church history, doctrines, the Holy Father, your personal beliefs, etc., and is open to anyone.

Please be respectful. As everyone knows, discussing religion can get pretty ugly. While debate is encouraged, everyone who posts needs to act somewhat civilized. :)

Have fun and may God bless you all!

I am Buddhist atheist and I do like the new pope. He seems to be more open to homosexuals and more progressive in general.

Is the Christian discussion thread somehow not suitable for discussing Catholicism?

God bless you, sir/ma'am, but may I suggest that you use the Christian Discussion Thread instead? I believe it's suitable enough for Catholic-specific discussions (well, it's Christian, after all).

Why not an Abrahamic Discussion Thread?

Besides the Bahai, Samaritans, Yazidi, Druze, Mandeans, Babist faith, and the Rastafarian religions are in need of representation.

If this is a thread solely for the discussion of Catholicism then let's talk about The sexual abuse cases that run rampant throught the religion

We're the majority of Christians. We don't need our own thread, we can just take over the CDT.

Define "majority"?
Are you talking about Catholicism vs everybody else or are you compartmentalizing the individual sects?

I see what you did there.

Yes, but while all Catholics are Christians... not all Christians are Catholics.

Irrelevant. The Christian Discussion thread renders this thread superfluous. The moderators will most likely lock this thread or merge it.

Believe me, sexual abuse runs MUCH more rampant in other religions than in Catholicism. I would know since I'm a Catholic Youth Minister who has undergone extensive Safe Environment Training. You're much more likely to be abused by a Jewish rabbi than a Catholic priest. You've always had been and always will be. If you are concerned about the recent public outcries regarding the actions a of a select couple of priests around the country (minority doesn't begin to give justice to just how few priests are actually found guilty of such crimes), don't be.

Not irrelevant since there are plenty of topics Catholics can exclusively discuss, such as the Pope, the Saints, the Eucharist, Catholic Church history, etc.

It'll be a shame if they did, though, since they wouldn't understand the significant differences Protestant Christians have with Catholic Christians over this sort of stuff.

It always seemed to me that the outcry got so bad because people realized that crying out about it would actually do something to the Church. The Church is an organization after all, it is easy to blame and you know that, if you throw enough flak at it, it'll do something to make people stop. Other Religions aren't as Militarily organized as the Catholic Church.

Not ignoring it whatsoever, the media just blows it way out of proportion. I would venture to say that it's borderline slander.

The Vatican actually does a tremendous job on handling sexual abuse cases, but you would never even know by tuning in to Western media.
