Can a Republican win the Presidency in 2016?

Postby The United Territories of Providence » Mon Jul 07, 2014 2:07 pm

On election night 2012 I watched Fox coverage of the election because I wanted to see the conservative reaction to an Obama victory. Bill O'Reilly said something that got me thinking. He said "We've lost the country....the white establishment is now the minority". I don't know exactly what he means by "white establishment" but the country certainly has become more liberal over the last 20 years. The majority of Americans are embracing ideas that go against the traditionalism of the past which may be good or bad depending on how you look at it. More People support same sex marriage, less people are religious, more people are becoming environmentally aware. The GOP isn't known for being a liberal party, and with America moving from the right in the 80's, to the centre in the 90's, to a little left of centre today one most wonder.... does the GOP stand a chance in the next election?

The platform doesn't appeal to a lot of Americans, and the tea party movement has discouraged citizens from voting Republican. The general consensus among young people and minorities is that the GOP is bad for America. I don't believe the GOP can win in 2016 unless they change their ideas, because they have lost a significant portion of the country. They're too conservative for most people, including me.

Assuming Hillary Clinton is the Democrat nominee, the only Republican in America who stands a fighting chance is Jon Huntsman or perhaps Rand Paul.

 "John Huntsman". Good luck with that.

As for the question, obviously it's possible, but I don't think it'll happen. I really don't want to see Hillary as the nominee though. Warren all the way.

Well, it has become more liberal despite what you Europeans say.

No, I don't see anyone in the Republican field that stands a chance. If Hillary is not running, maybe they'll have a slim chance.

Let's go Sanders.

I for one would be okay with either party (if they have a good candidate) and I think it's a bit early to see if the Republicans have a chance. It depends on the candidate in all honesty.

Rand is not as retarded as his dad, but then again, President Rand Paul sounds scary. I think Scott Brown would be my ideal Republican candidate. I hate Hilary's face and I definitely don't want her to win, but in the worst case scenario, she might be the best option.

Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

The answer is simple: if the Republicans nominate a candidate that is moderate, takes non-committal or liberal views on social issues, and can talk without offending half the country, then they can win.

It's technically possible. Personally, I predict a tie.

Its certaily a possibility, but it all depends on one thing. The Quality of the Republican. It is very likely Hillary Clinton will run in 2016, so they need to pick someone who can take her on, and not sound like a wingnut

So, no then. Such a candidate would never make it out of the primaries.

Sure, they could. Kim Jong-Un could conquer the world tomorrow with an army of squirrels. Every librarian in Venezuela could grow ice cream from their noses. Michael Jackson's ghost could moonwalk at 88 miles per hour and travel back in time to when he was alive. I could get laid. You get the picture...

25 years ago you could jail homosexuals for having sex. Today 60% of Americans think they should be able to get married, in states that used to have the harshest sodomy laws now have civil unions or same-sex marriage. I never said America was liberal, but we've moved a little left.

It would depend on the circumstances that happen over the next two years of course. Also, the Republican party would have to start to move to a more moderate stance on social issues. Americans are becoming more socially liberal, slowly. As for economics, it can go either way. We will have to wait and see what happens.

I will ask the obligatory "why?"

Basically, it's the difference between a centrist/centre right party and a centre right/right wing party, economically.

I give it about a 50/50 chance...

But in all honesty, I don't see why not. I mean after 8 years of Clinton people were tired of Democrats, after 8 years of Bush people were tired of Republicans and went with Obama, after 8 years of Obama people will likely be tired of Democrats and go for a Republican.

However, should a Democrat win in 2016 I will bet everything I have in my bank account at the time that a Republican WILL win in 2020.

I think if a liberal or moderate Republican won the primary yes, of course they could win. But not even moderate republicans have a chance at getting past the nomination faze of the race, so no.
