Here's the thing: A teacher calling you a racist for wearing a Confederate flag shirt would be in HUGE trouble. A professional in the industry would not do that, if only because the consequences would likely include a reprimand on her record, and possible suspension. So you either dealt with an astoundingly incompetent teacher AND administration (since in no part of your story did she suffer any consequences for her actions), or you somehow forgot to mention to the school administration that she had outright called you a racist, or you did tell them this and they ignored it (and you forgot to mention this important part in your story), or you invented the story to portray a New York teacher as a mustache-twirling villain and you as the cocky kid ready to stand up for the south, or you hallucinated the whole thing.

Revisionism is a hell of a drug.

No, I am suspicious of the claim that the view of one "foriegner", especially from a neighboring country, can adequetely express the view of "all foriegners"- Though I am sure that they would hold the same opinion in Western Europe, and most other foriegn nations.

If you'd included those details at the beginning, I'd have been slightly more likely to believe you, since that's the sort of thing that a person relating this sort of story wouldn't forget to mention. However, the fact that you included them only after I brought up their exclusion causes me to remain--to put it mildly--skeptical of your veracity, and your excuse that "I didn't think that any of you would be interested" doesn't hold water, since what made you think that we would be interested in the first part of your story, and not the fallout? No, that sounds a bit too much like your repeated claims about fifty pages or so ago that you had arguments that would absolutely convince us, but that you weren't going to bother to type them, since we'd just call them "Historical Revisionism".

I'm going to stop now, since to continue past may major point would simply be cruel and pointless.

I'm skeptical too. The story is just a little too cliched. The teacher just happens to be a New Yorker, and New York is one of those places that the South always picks on when they complain about the North. The bit about leave with pay only comes up AFTER you mention the teacher would get in trouble.

And the version we have now is a bit confusing. If the principal took the teacher's side, then why'd she get in trouble at all?

If the story was just, "I got in trouble once for wearing a Confederate flag shirt to school," I would have accepted that cos I'm sure it does happen. It's just the details and the way this was presented that make me question it...

The Cult of Lee is weird. There are other Civil War generals that have their admirers, but not the same way.

Maybe it's because I am not a Southerner or a Christian, but I just never found Lee all that interesting or admirable. The most admirable thing he ever did was surrender.

The Cult of Lee is weird. There are other Civil War generals that have their admirers, but not the same way.

Maybe it's because I am not a Southerner or a Christian, but I just never found Lee all that interesting or admirable. The most admirable thing he ever did was surrender.

It's probably just the "strong man" thing. Lee's the figurehead of the South during that time, and people have this strange, instinctual desire to unite behind the "strong leader". Lee's following may seem strange in comparison to other Civil War generals, but compare Lee's following to, say, the following Putin has, and it's suddenly not so strange.

To be fair, that depends on whether the ex-Nazi was formerly a US soldier, surrendered his troops to the Allied forces and then spoke of setting aside differences and refused to abide the presence of anyone who spoke poorly of Eisenhower.

Granted, those last two parts are almost always forgotten by modern Lee fans. He wanted the surrendered southerners to show pride in the country they had rejoined, and was rather protective of Grant after the two had met and he had come to understand his opponent and his motivations.

Everyone, let's honor the German dead in WWII by putting the Swastika over their graves, and while we are at it, put up the WWII Hinomaru, with the rays and everything, on the grave of Japanese soldiers, just because, pissing off Jews, Poles, and Gypsies is not enough, we must piss off everyone in East Asia.
