kind of like how when you get older you realize the magic of Halloween is dressing up and not so much the candy...

you can buy candy any day, just like anime can be watched any time, but getting an excuse to dress up like your favorite character/person is always rare...

Yep. Therein lies the problem. Modern Southern culture needs to use some other symbol. Hell, almost any other symbol that is divorced from its darkest days.

I should read a book by the President of the Confederacy trying to justify his own ass in light of the fact that he lost, and that people are going to rightly remember him as the president of a racist, slave-based nation which lost to the North. Completely unbiased and honest.

Slavery would have ceased to be a viable economic system by the time industrialization hit the south.

At the very worse their might have been a butler or maid class after slaverys demise, but it is tough to say since the CSA didn't win..
