Had a nice friendly bout with a friend who's been a practitioner for several years, and the brother lost pretty quickly. I don't blame him, and it isn't so much a matter of superior skill as it was a matter of style and its relevance. He was fast, is form was great, and he had power behind his movement.

Hung Gar Kuen is one of those Chinese styles that come from a time when people used to hurl "hay maker punches" or wide, bowling fists at people and use flowery techniques on each other. Things've changed. If you look at modern boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Sanda, Savate, or even Karate and Taekwondo, striking's changed. It's all about efficiency and readiness now. You don't commit your whole presence to a single punch or kick - one must be tactical and withdraw the extended limb immediately after to either 1) cycle another strike or 2) brace for impact expecting an incoming one.

Still, it's a damn shame. It's a beautiful art.
