I'm a "liberal royalist." Standards and guidelines do matter, but the creative input of the youth also matters. The structure they are given should be there to empower them and help them believe that their imaginations are capable, with the practice of discipline, accomplishing something real and substantial in the real world. The guidelines are a tool for their use.
A teacher once explained this to me about the structure students are expected to learn for writing an essay, and I went on to become a fairly good writer. It does work.
