Some of us here pronounce Hielo as yelo (or Llelo) and maíz as mais and to be frank.. i don't think there's a distinction between spanish S and Z.. at least not in latin american spanish :p

I feel the need to clarify that my take on the mais/maiz thing was not an attempt at making fun of anyone. I grew up writing maiz that way and just pointed it out. My attempt was not one of derision.

Sorry if it came across that way, especialmente si Issa lo tomo mal. It wasn't meant that way.

Oh no, I didn't take it wrongly. I grew up with the S sound for the Z sound myself. I tried to use Z but people told me I sounded snobbish so I dropped it.
