No.

- The Americans i've met have, on first impression, seemed very friendly but when you get beyond the very first interactions there seems to be a significant chunk whose friendliness is completely superficial. They're too loud, too self interested, and have very strange and naive views about the world. I'm used to people in NI who open themselves up fully to guests and are extremely genuinely friendly. It's a tough act to follow.

- I'm a proponent of increased private involvement in healthcare but unfortunately I can't stomach quite the extent to which that has gone in the US.

- I find myself accosted by plastic paddy types on every trip that way.

"Superficial, loud, self interested, and have very strange and naive views about the world"? You practically described half the Internet.

I will admit that Americans are very loud, no doubt, however I've been to the US twice now and they're also very friendly. Ignorant and annoying people are everywhere, not just the US. And their healthcare is indeed messed up, especially because it's so expensive.

Ignorant and annoying people are indeed everywhere but i've never experienced quite the concentrations of the US. As i've said I find the American friendliness to strangers to be extremely superficial in comparison to that I know elsewhere.

Absolutely not. I can barely tolerate being dragged out of Britain occasionally on holiday for a week. Moving to another country? Gods no.

There are other places where I feel much more comfortable living in than the US (in general) for a multitude of reasons, some of which I share with the OP. But all in all, the US is not on the top of my list.

With that said, I'll probably, eventually, find myself living in the US again... but I assure you, I won't like it one bit :p lol

That's exactly how I feel about the USA.

In that it is all an act put on for the individuals benefit. It's like the false friendliness of waiters and waitresses there leeched into the rest of the population.

I've also found Americans to be most tolerable in small numbers. It seems like the more of them there are in one place, the more obnoxious and extreme they tend to be. Tend to. Not always, though.

Personally, I'm glad to have landed in Oregon. The Pacific Northwest is, by and large, a pretty chill place. With decent beer. That's something any Canadian can appreciate. :)

Well, at least it's not France where everyone is rude to your face. I'd rather take fake friendliness over legitimate rudeness.

I could, sure. But I could live in Sri Lanka or Mali too. I could, but I don't want to.

Actually I'd like to visit, as a tourist. There are lots of sights to see (the US invented National Parks, and has some of the best) and the people seem friendly (at least to those who speak English, which obviously I do). I'm not ashamed to say I find the US very interesting.

But actually live there? Nah.

He's already made it clear he's unaware of the political demographics of NSG, and how it's dominated by liberals.

And a rather clear example of precisely why there are so many negative views about Americans in general. Good job perpetuating the stereotype.
