Who are some Democratic pundits?

Postby Jack O Land » Thu Jun 19, 2014 7:47 pm

We all know about the hilarious, bigot-tastic, tongue-tied misadventures of Republican pundits like Bill O'Reilly and Sarah Palin, but it seems that, although claims are made that there are idiots on both sides, the Republican Party has done a pretty bad job of pointing out the Democrats who really have no idea what they're doing. I am a Democrat, but I enjoy hearing both sides of the issue, so why don't you give me some names so I can be sure that it's not just the Tea Party spouting nonsense.

And, while you're at it, you can share the names of some more reasonable Republican opinion-havers if you're so inclined.
Idealists and idiots should have as little power as possible.

All hail the Pumpkin God!

I'm certain that there are respectable, intelligent people who are Republicans who do a good job of reasonably debating points in their favour and always take care to respect the other side of the debate who are always willing to hear both sides of the issue.

They're just drowned out by the idiots in the mainstream television and radio networks.

If it weren't for my innate sense of confirmation bias (it's human nature), I'm sure I'd view democratic overly-partisan pundits as idiots, too. MSNBC is as bad as Fox, in my eyes.

There aren't really any eccentric pundits like O'Reilly.

However there's some comedians like John Stewart and Steven Colbert (I'm not sure if they're really pundits per se, but they're on the left and comment politically to an extnet), and a more serious one on MSNBC Rachel Maddow comes to mind.

Rachel Maddow, Martin Bashir, Al Sharpton, Piers Morgan, etc. Two of the ones I mentioned have been fired recently though.

Well, and this is just an opinion of mine so mileage may vary naturally, but mid-afternoon on MSNBC can sometimes be a hellscape of well intentioned goofballs.

Starting with my least favorite, Ed from The Ed Show...what the fuck is that guy's last name? Schultz. Ed Schultz. Here are the things that bug me about Ed Schultz:

-He's a sports caster, which...not really the issue in and of itself but he talks like a damn high school football coach about serious political issues with things like "the take down" and referring to potential nevergonnahappen debates with Republican figures in boxing terms. It's that kind of annoying sitting around a bar talking about how much you'd kick that guy on the tv's ass that I have no patience for.

-He does snap surveys with bloopy questions of his viewers during the show that essentially ask "Do you agree with me" and then reports the results like they have any meaning whatsoever. Annoying.

-He has adopted the worst elements of the other sports caster turned pundit turned sports caster, Kieth Obermann, and dedicates too much of his show to Fox Soup. Pundits on Fox saying nutty shit isn't news, I don't watch Fox News because they say nutty things, I don't need to see the nutty things they say broadcast on MSNBC so you can pat yourself on the back for recognize they're nutty.

While I kind of like Sharpton as a character, as a deflated balloon (sigh...this is where I'm headed, if you're a life long fat guy who loses weight, you look like a deflated balloon) who has to host a daily show, he struggles. When he can get into that religious bombast, he's fine, when he has to explain complex issues with many facets, he struggles to read his teleprompter and can't keep up with the floor director so he'll look at the wrong camera or do the wrong throw to a new segment. Plus, he can get carried away so you wind up going, "Yeah. Yeah. Ye-wait, what? No...I don't think that's what that means."

-Lawrence O'Donnell, the political officer turned screenwriter (West Wing) turned pundit whose deliver is stilted and labored and level of smug self satisfaction is grating even when you agree with him. Like Schultz, he's more interested in other people being wrong than being right and it's tedious.

It all gets better once Rachel Maddow and her clique get on because they're, at their core, policy nerds and spend most of their time examining policy and putting events in a context that you can look up rather than going, "look at this silly thing this silly person said, aren't they silly?"...which, by the way, abdicates control of the conversation to crazy people. Which is not only a waste of time, but actually destructive to the discourse.

On AM radio, I don't know. The Right has those airwaves kind of locked up.

I haven't watch MSNBC in an age, so I don't know what the current state of affairs is but I'm pretty sure those guys are still on it.

"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Bill Maher and Piers Morgan.
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

TV is a business, and networks want a product that people will pay attention to (even if they only pay attention in order to ridicule). Anne Coulter gave a speech at my college last year, and people went f*cking bananas either attacking or defending her presence on campus.

But yeah, there are some true idiots on both sides of the line. Here are some of my personal least favorite:

1. Sean Hannity
2. Bill O'Reilly
3. Anne Coulter

1. Bill Maher
2. Al Sharpton
3. Rachel Maddowe

All of these people are so incredibly biased in their views that anyone who forms their opinions based off of their rants should really get their head examined.
