Texas Republicans wants to repeal 1965 Voting Rights Act

Postby Trollzilla » Wed Jun 18, 2014 10:56 pm

The Republican Party of the State of Texas has just passed a resolution as part of the platform that the state's Congressional representatives do everything they can to repeal the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This has just come out.

http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/texas-republ ... rights-act

What are your thoughts on this?

OK Second Edit

This is typical of state that does not want to recognize the rights of minorities such as transgender people such as myself. If this happened it would be a step back into the dark ages.

Not at all surprised. In about 15 minutes all my right wing family members will be talking about how great this is.

The whole "gay therapy" shit they wanted to do is just completely crazy, but this is just plain racist and unjust.

As well as completely crazy.

I had to do an edit. The gentleman on the TV made a mistake. It is the Voting Rights Act not the Civil Rights Act. I thought something was off when he referred to the "Civil Rights Act of 1965" I thought he just got the year wrong. Turns out the year was correct but the wrong law was cited.

Also, what's your opinion, OP?

I'm just waiting for somebody to come out of the woodworks and defend this ridiculous platform so we can all pounce.

Shit, this is real. I knew the Texas GOP was nuts, but this...

Any shred of respect I had for the GOP, which wasn't much, is now gone.

Because denying rights to gays just isn't enough.

Another example of how the Republican Party is a group of insane old gun toting white guys who have no business running this country, or any Town, City, county, or State within it.

Go to page 5 of this. Blatantly says that they want the voter rights act repealed.

:palm: what the honest fuck Texan GOP.

EDIT: Page 5 of the actual platform, not the table of contents.

What are your thoughts on this?

I've made a program just for this, guys. It can predict what the arguments for defending their platform with a 70% accuracy. Trust me, I'm a Computer Scientist:

1. Well, we already have the 19th and the 14th amendment so who cares?!

2. Look, it says they support everyone of all races so they can't be racist!

Voting Rights - We support equal suffrage for all U.S. Citizens of voting age who are not felons. We
oppose any identification of citizens by race, origin, or creed and oppose use of any such identification for
purposes of creating voting districts.

3. We're not racist cause the GOP has black members in it!

Do they want Texas to turn purple even faster than it already is?
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.

Being a moderate conservative, I can see they have a fairly good reason, reducing voter fraud (Which is virtually nonexistent). But an absolutely terrible idea on how to fix said problem. Repealing the VRA is not the answer, but I think it is perfectly logical for states to request a State Issued Photo ID in order to vote.

:p
I would support the photo id part if they were free. Texas charges sixteen dollars for one, though I won't get into how big of a real cost it is or not for low income.
