Come now, would you be surprised if it was real?

Anyway in regards to the OP, if i was drafted to fight against something similar to Nazi Germany then sure i would probably fight, though i would point out the fact that im not exactly in the ideal physical condition so it would take a while before i would be of any substantial good to the war effort. If i was drafted due to a conflict with a neighbouring country that was not Nazi Germany reborn it would depend on the reasons for the war, who started it, that kind of thing.

If i however disagreed with the war effort and its goals i would probably try and resist the draft and if that failed defect to the enemy or a neutral party first opportunity. Im not going to kill and possibly throw my life away from something i do not support. I would not want to kill anyway unless it was absolutely necessary.

10% of the US military today is infantry, and two thirds of the US military force in WWII was conscripted. Granted, the tooth to tail ratio was probably a lot higher, but still.

That is always the case, but it does not change the fact that draftees, when a draft was in place, served throughout the forces, and not just in "safe" support jobs.

The original statement was "more likely". The tooth to tail ratio is about ~16%(?) in the US forces today. The figure is surprisingly and ludicrously low, but the study didn't state what it considered "combat support", so a bunch of that ~84% number will include large numbers of naval personnel and air crews and probably even artillery.

How about this. Which of these postulates is not your argument?
1. It is the duty of everyone whose country has given him the basics he needs to live and prosper to serve his country.
2. Such service does extend to killing or endangering others, destroying their homes, and attempting to destroy their countries.
3. If someone else is attempting to kill or endanger one's self, one's friends, or one's family, or destroy one's home, or destroy one's country, the defense of one's country involves responding in kind.

1 is true. 2 and 3 are partially true, partially incorrect. Everyone has a duty to defend their country, but that does not mean they get to disregard the rules of engagement and the like. Revenge strikes against civilians, etc. Is a definite no no. And the "duty to turn life into eternal living hell" argument is downright asinine.

I'm out.

Serve my country? The very idea seems ridiculous to me. I don't nearly love my country enough to serve it, let alone die for it. Those sacrifices are reserved for my loved ones.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Morally I'd be opposed. But realistically I don't want to go to jail. Maybe decades latter it would entitle me to a free Memorial Day meal at a veterans center.

Exactly what it says on the tin, in case you were to be conscripted/drafted, would you serve?

As for me, I'd only consider serving if the war in question was against a mass murdering/genocidal entity, that would pose a direct threat to my welbeing (and life) and that of those I care about.

Well firstly i kinda would have to, due to it would be a MANDATORY thing, meaning if you did not do it, you could be jailed or punished.

Secondly, i would want to find out why we were fighting the war, like if it was against a genocidal dictator, a major enemy of the country, or just for resources, it would all depend.

Besides, if you truly do not want to serve in this, then just flunk basic training, you don't get accepted, and then they send you back home.
