Stop right there. God kills people with cancer in order to get rid of evil?

It's kind of nice when the other side just hands you the moral high-ground like that. I must confess.

This. Religion mainly came up in the first place to enforce those types of rules and codify them into culture.

It's pretty easy, empathy and enlightened self interest. I know that I feel this way when I am hurt, other people probably feel the same way. I don't want to hurt, and I'm pretty sure others don't want to hurt either. Since I don't like it when I hurt, it would probably be better not to hurt others.

The quandary itself does not confuse me. It is an argument justifying the need for a God in modern times. Because we now don't need a God for the sun to rise tomorrow or to cure ourselves of the hickups, we need something more philosophical as an explanation to keep him around. After all, if he didn't serve a purpose, why would we spend so much of our lives devoted to him? Take a low level marketing class and you'll understand it perfectly.

Without a God, all morality ultimately becomes entirely relative, so it depends on specific circumstances desires and motivations. But yeah, pretty much. Plus what does permissibility even mean? I mean, technically we can do whatever now, it's just that God's gonna have a word with us in the afterlife.

Even with a god, morality is relative, it's just that god made the decisions instead of humans. It's still subjective.
