That's not true. You'd still have the same memories, and they would continue to have a large influence in your life. As someone who had a mental illness and got it cured, it does change you and make your life different, but it doesn't change everything.

This, pretty much. It may seem stupid or illogical to us for someone to refuse the treatment, but it is their right as a human being. They do have their right to bodily sovereignty, and that extends to their mental faculties.

I provide care for mentally retarded, or intellectually disabled people, depending on where you are on the euphemistic treadmill, for living. Some of them are autistic. Now, I would identify these people first as intellectually disabled rather than autistic. The fact is, that we really don't know much at all about autism. We don't know what causes it, we don't know why there are such huge variations in the degree of the severity of the symptoms, we don't know what causes that variation. I think that is the reason for the whole spectrum idea. If we knew more about it, we would not lump HFA, MFA and LFA together. In fact, those terms are disputed as it is. We don't know if the cause for low IQ (that is essentially what lower functioning means) in autistic people is the same as the cause for other autistic symptoms. The best we can do is provide these people with some semblance of a worthy life. A low functioning autist can be violent and harmful to, not only to themselves, but to those around them. They do not perceive time as normal people do, they need structure and constant reminding of that structure in their life. If we are considering a hypothetical that removes all autistic features from these people, even if the intellectual disability remains, I'd say go for it. Not only does it make their own life easier it eases on the burden of those who care for them, or for other reasons have to endure them.
