Ho Chi Mihn is kind of overrated down in Vietnam, indeed.

He's seen almost like a mythological figure. They even have his corpse in the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum - something he said NOT to do to begin with.

El Che? He was as alright as Minh.

edit: from wiki

n 1911, while working as the cook's helper on a ship, Nguyen traveled to the United States. From 1912–13, he lived in New York (Harlem) and Boston, where he worked as a baker at the Parker House Hotel. Among a series of menial jobs, he claimed to have worked for a wealthy family in Brooklyn between 1917–18, and for General Motors as a line manager. It is believed that, while in the United States, he made contact with Korean nationalists, an experience that developed his political outlook.[

Do remember that, during Roosevelt's administration the OSS stationed in Hanoi helped the guy. Archimedes Patti was the OSS officer in Hanoi who helped Minh clandestinely in exchange to create an intelligence network. He also helped Minh draft the Vietnam's Declaration of Independence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archimedes_Patti

That being said, I do think Minh's subsequent guerilla war shouldn't have happened at all would they have read Patti's reports.

He did help shape modern Latin-American communism/socialism (and no, Latin American brands of socialism were not even allied to the Kremlin; Cuba was the only country who ever sought diplomatic contact with the USSR).

The only thing I can't say about him was in his latter years in Africa. Those I see as a disaster.

A lot of people on NS, and especially TET, seem to have self-styled titles in their sigs. I want one, but I can't seem to come up with one. I do want it to end with "Perhaps you've heard of me? You probably haven't."
