People with low-self esteem often act supremely arrogant because they don't want to be hurt. They are very susceptible to shame and insults, which is why they flip their shit so hard when they feel insulted.
They start bigging themselves up in their own mind in order to cope, and when you challenge that view of themselves they are terrified of going back to being considered the weird kid with no friends who smells funny, lets laugh at him.
They fail to recognize that people have grown up.
