NH Police Chief calls Obama the 'N'-word

Postby Starkmoor » Fri May 16, 2014 3:01 pm

http://www.salon.com/2014/05/16/old_whi ... 9t_racist/

If you assumed the police commissioner who called President Obama the N-word lived in the South, you were in for a surprise. Robert Copeland lives in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, a state with its share of right-wingers and gun-toting freedom-lovers but one that also voted, twice, for Obama, even though Mitt Romney claimed it as one of his five or so home states. Rather unbelievably, Wolfeboro happens to be the very town where Romney’s vacation estate is located.

For anyone who hasn’t followed the story, Copeland complained loudly in a local restaurant that he’s sick of television, because every time he watches he sees “that fucking n***r,” better known as the president of the United States. When a patron wrote a letter of complaint to the town manager and to all three members of Wolfeboro’s police commission, including Copeland, she got a letter back from Copeland himself:

“While I believe the problems associated with minorities in this country are momentous, I am not phobic. My use of derogatory slang in reference to those among them undeserving of respect is no secret. It is the exercise of my 1st Amendment rights,” Copeland wrote. “I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse [sic]. For this I do not apologize – he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”

So for the record, the 82-year-old Copeland is not “phobic” about minorities, and in fact he has “criteria” for who deserves to be called the N-word. He’s not just throwing the word around.

We seem to have an epidemic of elderly white racists trying to explain their racism, to give what they believe are considered explanations for their abhorrent beliefs. They have criteria. They’ve thought this whole thing through. They’re not expressing loathsome and ignorant and hateful prejudice; they’ve got fact and reason on their side.

Say what you will about Obama, I have my own criticism of his time in office, but the racist nut types out there are really showing their true colors. I guess I can't believe that a) this guy was dumb enough to say this out loud about the President and b) dumb enough to do it in a public place. He's not even trying to backpedal from this.

Time for this fool to be fired. He must not have any sense at all to do something like this. What do you all think?

Watch as Fox News claims his firing/forced resignation is a violation of his "first amendment rights."

Because keeping your job no matter what you say in public or private is most certainly guaranteed by the first amendment.

Your rights end where my feelings begin!

Also, why do we keep calling it "The n word"? Why not just say nigger?

He holds a position of authority, he's not some Joe Blow that has beef with the President. But no, let's let everyone in a position of power go around calling people niggers. Why not let Congress in on it? "This bill will damage our nation because it was written by that uppity nigger."

It's the reason this man is in the newspapers instead of in prison.

No one is suggesting that Commissioner Copeland be deprived of any rights. Just that he be fired. He has no right to keep a job he is clearly incompetent at.

Last I checked, a Police Department is a publicly funded organization, therefore I'd imagine the freedom of speech applies there, too. Soldiers agree to withdraw their rights, which I don't think cops do. So, I can understand a private company firing over butthurt, but not a Police Department.

Wow, that happened on the first page, impressive. Anyways, your first amendment right is quite clearly that the government can not penalize you for speaking your mind- a.k.a. throw you in prison, execute you, or fine you. You don't have the right to insult others in public. There are also provisions made for hate speech, or speech to incite panic. This might not have been quite hate speech, but it comes very close.

Prison would be better than being bombarded by liberals for the short extent of liberalism's future grasp on western society.

You can say he can be fired, sure, but that's kind of ironic. Using your freedom of speech to penalize someone else for their freedom of speech? Good logic.

You called it:

Because the N-word is incredibly offensive and while your right to say it is protected by freedom of speech, my right to call you an asshole for defending the use of the N-word is also protected by those same rights. Also, the man's employer has the right to fire him if he doesn't like him, and I think this guy's employer is probably understandably upset.

The fact that it's a government institution doesn't negate what I said. It's more or less equal to a police precinct firing or demoting a lieutenant because the lieutenant extremely bad with PR.

Call me an asshole, cracker, paddy, mick all you want, but don't try to do anything to infringe on anyone's freedom of speech by using your own. His employer is the government, not a private company.

The guy is a public servant with considerable power over people. The population needs to know that he will use his power fairly and perform his job well.

New Laikland wrote:Also, why do we keep calling it "The n word"? Why not just say nigger?

Because thats the way it is. Almost everyone out there besides racists and some rappers would rather see that word disappear. Its basically the American equivalent of the swastika, albeit a word rather than a printed symbol.
