Correct, we call our team 'oranges' mostly.

Now lets hope that we can play Argentina off the field.

Pretty sure we call our team not "oranges". We call it "Oranje", which can be only be translated as "Orange" (referring to the colour). "oranges" are a fruit.

Meanwhile, Argentina will take the silver medal and Netherlands will get juiced by the Brazil Nuts.

Hey yeah. That solves the "soccer" versus "football" naming dispute. Let's just call it paedoball.

I would assume 100% of matches will be exclusive to Sky (for Kiwis) but one never knows. It really depends on how much money Sky thinks advertising having exclusive coverage will make.

7-1 against the hosts is more or less a scoreline likely to be associated with the latter (ignoring the obvious issues with scoring differences). Australia's team won't be anywhere near as good as some of the ones it has fielded in the past (like Brazil) but it will still be actually world class (unlike Brazil). The Black Caps have fallen a long way down the ODI table since the Fleming days but we save our dramatic collapses for test matches (I believe we have all three of the lowest three test innings totals ever). That said, in 2007 NZ did beat Australia by ten wickets which is about as emphatic as this destruction of Brazil by Germany (for the team bowling first).

Note: Wiki has these as the only two events hosted by NZ in 2015; they're not just the ones that I a) care about (the cricket one) and b) have been bombarded with advertising for.

And that's interesting too. Just give the players bats and put a wicket somewhere on the football pitch, and the Euro/South American stranglehold on the World Cup would be a thing of the past.

But that's not cricket is it? Not football either. A foul hybrid which England still can't win.

It's more rugby and cricket that tend to get played on the same grounds (well, in Auckland at least) with the soccer and league at Mt Smart and cricket and rugby Mt Eden (the main stadium, not the prison*). Having looked at the U20 WC link none of those are played at Mt Smart which suggests that my view of that as a soccer location is mostly influenced by a recent match their that really clogged up the trains (not to cause problems but it's funny watching normally pretty empty Onehunga services filled to the brim).

That said, this hypothetical sport sounds a bit like hockey so Netherlands/Germany final is still going to happen. Actually, Argentina don't seem too shabby either at hockey.

*Funnily enough, the prison backs onto one of the most desirable schools and, therefore, does not have any impact on house prices in the area.

After that soul-crushing performance, Brazil is probably going to need a lot more to get their motivation and confidence back, and I doubt many will be eager to see them in Brasilia.

Nope.

Les Bleus wear blue - from the Pantone Reflex Blue of their flag, while gli Azzurri wear the Savoy azure.

Indeed. FIFA needs to make sure a South American team gets in the final, after all.

Now, if I were Brazilian, I would support Germany in a Germany/Argentina final.

Would you really want Argentina to be the ones who defeated the team that defeated you?

On a less funny note, there were indeed public riots in several Brazilian cities after yesterday's game. Apparently no deaths though.

I am Brazilian, and I will be supporting the Netherlands in a Netherlands/Germany final. In a Germany/Argentina final, I'd just turn off my TV and pretend this Cup never happened.

Your nation is like a son. What it does right is your merit, as well as what it does wrong is your fault. When you praise it, be lucid and avoid exaggeration. Praising it too much can make it indolent. On the other hand, when you criticize it, be harsh, but do not ridicule it. Do your best to improve it, not through derision or disdain, but through good examples and dedication.

Otherwise it'd be de Sinaasappels or de Oranjes. Both are very different things.

Wikipedia says at least one person has died, but it's Wikipedia, people are trolling all over the place thanks to this ridiculous result and I'm too lazy to do my own research. Here's hoping Wikipedia is wrong - this is a game, for fuck's sake.

Brazilians who hate Argentina are absolute sillies and I want to hear the noise from their crumbling.
Pro: Communism/anarchism, Indigenous rights, MOGAI stuff, bodily autonomy, disability rights, environmentalism
Meh: Animal rights, non-harmful religion/superstition, militant atheism, left-leaning reform of capitalism
Anti: Dyadic superstructure (sex-gender birth designation and hierarchy), positivism, conservatism, imperialism, Zionism, Orientalism, fascism, religious right, bending to reactionary concerns before freedom/common concern, fraudulent beliefs and ideologies

Formerly "Hetalian Indie Rio de Janeiro".

Compass: -10.00, -9.13

Ailiailia wrote:Commentators are saying Brazil suffered more from the lack of da Silva than Neymar.

I think they're probably right. Once the German attack discovered it could pass the ball freely right in front of the Brazil goal, those four goals in about six minutes happened. And after that (Germany from 1-0 to 5-0) Brazil's fate was sealed.[...]
Well, that's a part of it - but there's another aspect, which brings us back to Germany's set piece strength - would you risk an endless amount of small, not yellow-worthy, tactical fouls in your own half against an opponent who specialises in set pieces?

Of course not.

Now, how did Brazil's defence control its opponent's attacking attempts in the previous five games? An endless amount of small, not yellow-worthy, tactical fouls in their own half? Sauce (Okay, 'Not yellow-worthy' is clearly debatable...).

Whoops.

For that reason, I'm unconvinced that Thiago Silva would've made all that much of a difference - Brazil's basic defensive approach was unsustainable against Germany, with or without him. I'm certain that they were told not to foul as much as usual, lest it costs them the game - but there was no Plan B, no alternative to the fouls. The consequence? A defence in shambles.

Brazil lost with 7-1 in a World Cup, in a semifinal, on at home. Were humiliated with a huge global audience. Lost a record number of final, lost record goalscorer, are in tears. Worse than it is?

Many Brazilians on the internet are preferring to have lost a final for Argentina, with a minor difference. Just hold out the neighbors, not the whole world.

That was terrible.

Hilarious, but terrible.

Though I never saw the point of these youth tournaments. Hardly anyone who plays in them actually comes out big - best case scenario, they don't matter. Worst case scenario, they actually burn talented players out before their time.

Depends on the circles you're conversing in, really.

In some of them, there's a hell of a lot of Confederation-Rivalry - you know, the sort of thing that makes Germans and Dutchmen support each other against CONMEBOL sides. And the same applies vice versa.

Now, that's not the case everywhere. The old rivalries still persist. But Confed-Rivalries do exist, and can override the national ones. /sp/ is a particularly glaring example, but it can also be found - to a lesser extend, of course - in at least one football forum I frequent, as well as the odd commentary @ the Guardian & co.

Well, shit. It's been a good run. We could have been better, obviously. I don't even think we did our best, but well. Hopefully, we'll win the 2015 Copa América.

Now, let's go Holland!
