Every team in world cup history safe for Saudi Arabia performed better against Germany than Brazil did.

It is almost heartbreaking how, where I watched the game, nobody even cared anymore when Özil almost made the 8:0.

I did in the aftermath, when i learned that this would've equalised brazil's highest ever goal concessions.

i mean, when you're breaking a dozen records in a single game, may as well go all the way...

Does anyone seriously still give a shit about Maradona?

I don't think a Caesar's done that badly against the Germans since the 31st of December, 406 AD.

And Dante has no chance of reaching Purgatory, never mind Paradise; he'll always be consigned to the Inferno after last night.

I could keep going, but otherwise I doubt I could say anything that hasn't been said by plenty of people before, and possibly by other people in this thread (which I've only skimmed since yesterday); but, for the record....

Germany are first side to score seven goals in a World Cup semi-final.

Six goals is the largest margin of victory in a World Cup semi-final; the previous five-goal record margin was set by the semi-finals in 1930 (both of which ended 6-1).

No team has previously scored five goals inside the first 30 minutes in a World Cup match.

Brazil's previous heaviest defeat in a World Cup match was 3-0 (in the 1998 final).

Kroos' two goals in 69 seconds was the fastest margin for one player to score two goals in succession in tournament history.

Brazil hadn't lost a competitive fixture at home since 1975.

Brazil last lost by six goals in 1920 (a 6-0 loss to Uruguay).

Miroslav Klose is now the all-time leading goal scorer in World Cup history - surpassing Brazil's Ronaldo in Brazil against Brazil.
You forgot one other that gives perspective - it's apparently been twenty-eight years since a wc semifinal last ended by a margin of more than one within ninety minutes.

In any case - key difference between this germany and 2006/ 10 germany?

Toni Kroos and his accurate corners/ free kicks. Goals after set pieces in the previous two wcs? One in fourteen games.

Now? Five in six. And more often than not, the first goal of the game.

Previously, germany relied on its opponent being careless. If he wasn't, it lacked the means to do shit, it had only one way of play. Now, it no longer matters. Get corner, score, force your opponent to open up, done.

It is, frankly, impossible to overrate Kroos. He's all the difference.

And Bayern are about to give him away. Lul

Commentators are saying Brazil suffered more from the lack of da Silva than Neymar.

I think they're probably right. Once the German attack discovered it could pass the ball freely right in front of the Brazil goal, those four goals in about six minutes happened. And after that (Germany from 1-0 to 5-0) Brazil's fate was sealed.

Brazil had some good chances too, in the second half. But it's hard to play anything but desperate when you need 5, then 6, then 7 goals just to force extra time.

I'm actually glad Brazil got a goal right at the end there. 7-0 would be just cruel :(

Even more perspective...

It's the first time since a 2-1 loss to Italy in 1938 that Brazil have lost a World Cup semi-final; they'd won all six subsequent semifinals they'd contested until yesterday.

Brazil had never previously conceded more than 5 goals in a World Cup match, last conceding five in a 6-5 extra-time win over Poland - also in 1938.

Yes. Fortunately, different languages. You would be unlikely to find a French person referring to Italy as Les Bleus. They're more than likely to call them the Azzurri. I'm British and wouldn't call either team "the blues".

Some of the Cricket World Cup matches. However, more relevant to this thread the U20 FIFA World Cup. I would assume 100% of matches will be exclusive to Sky (for Kiwis) but one never knows. It really depends on how much money Sky thinks advertising having exclusive coverage will make.

7-1 against the hosts is more or less a scoreline likely to be associated with the latter (ignoring the obvious issues with scoring differences). Australia's team won't be anywhere near as good as some of the ones it has fielded in the past (like Brazil) but it will still be actually world class (unlike Brazil). The Black Caps have fallen a long way down the ODI table since the Fleming days but we save our dramatic collapses for test matches (I believe we have all three of the lowest three test innings totals ever). That said, in 2007 NZ did beat Australia by ten wickets which is about as emphatic as this destruction of Brazil by Germany (for the team bowling first).

Note: Wiki has these as the only two events hosted by NZ in 2015; they're not just the ones that I a) care about (the cricket one) and b) have been bombarded with advertising for.

You know, it only just struck me that Italy are one of those teams that favours playing in a colour not on their flag (NZ is an interesting case of course because our flag is less likely to be seen waved by fans of whatever sport* in favour of an advertising piece).

*Of course, they all play follow the leader with their names of course (in hindsight, I should, of course, learn new words... okay that one was deliberate). All Blacks starts the trend so there are Tall Blacks (basketball), Black Sox (softball; actually more successful than the All Blacks in terms of World Cups strangely enough), Silver Ferns (netball, from the iconic image so still counts), the Black Caps (best name) and, for soccer the All Whites (actually a colour on the flag, albeit very much a minor colour, so good on them). There are more names but the list goes on and on (only the cricketers, rugby players, netballers and, increasingly, soccer players actually matter much though).

Hey yeah. That solves the "soccer" versus "football" naming dispute. Let's just call it paedoball.

And that's interesting too. Just give the players bats and put a wicket somewhere on the football pitch, and the Euro/South American stranglehold on the World Cup would be a thing of the past.

But that's not cricket is it? Not football either. A foul hybrid which England still can't win.
