Rather than a long, boring forum or blog post, I decided to put my thoughts over the top of a game of Super Soccer on the SNES, the video is here.

This game is so old that Croatia didn't even exist as a choice, so had to go with Brazil vs Yugoslavia instead.

I simply see Chile as the main competitor of my favorites Spain and the Netherlands. I like the way Chile play football though, and I have some sympathy for the Australians as underdogs as well. Nice group, unfortunately only 2 teams can go to the second round.

Incidentally, I wish to make an argument that football is closely related to pro wrestling.

• predetermined results
• Refs actively turning a blind eye to illegitimate match conduct
• athletes pretending injuries
• evil corporate villains making millions
• full-size posters of their stars in sports magazines that teenaged boys put on their walls without anyone questioning their sexuality

I haven't experienced them at an actual match, only via TV. Who I have experienced in an actual match are Turks (Much better than their reputation) and Frenchmen (Terrible).

I thought it was the Costa Rican fans who did that sort of thing.

Central America in general seems particularly bad about that sort of thing - El Salvador has similar problems, as does Guatemala.

I think there's a difference between Mexico travelling supporters who can afford to go to Brazil (or Germany) to watch the WC and those who hop on a bus or van and come here for qualifiers/Gold Cup. Maybe a demographic difference means that Mexico supporters at the World Cup are, well, better behaved?

The defending was terrible even when sitting back. They've got to be more like they were in the last half hour, must keep getting forward, if they're to have any shot of making their next two games a competition.
