Because the default position of things is not that they have rights. My computer doesn't get to choose when I'm allowed to type on it. My table doesn't have to be in an acquiescent mood for me to rest the computer on it.

Perhaps most importantly, though - a foetus shouldn't have rights because even considering that paradigm creates the kind of silliness we see in this thread, where people start taking rights AWAY from OTHER (actual, real) people.
