Eurovision 2014

So, the first semi final of the Eurovision Song Contest is in less than one hour. I know many people watch the show, but no one actually makes the thread in time. :p

This thread is basically a discussion thread for all things Eurovision.
Are you watching this year's contest? Have you ever watched Eurovision before? Do you like any of the entries? Any predictions for this year's winner?
I liked the Hungarian and Romanian entries, but I don't think they will actually win.

Let the posts (or lack of them :P) commence.

I watch Eurovision every year, it's my favourite faking event, ever. I usually support Serbia but sadly they withdrew from the contest this year. So I guess I'll just support whatever song I like the most and hope that nation wins (Last year I supported Ukraine, the year before Malta, etc). I actually usually avoid the semi-finals, so all the songs are new to me for when I watch the finals.

Oh, and I'll be laughing when Britain comes last.

Ive never bothered watching any of the actual singing in euro vision, i just watch the final scoring session to see the bias a lot of different countries have, and also to see some of the presenters make fools of themselves.

I watch more for the stats than for the music, since I'm not into pop/slow music anymore.
But it's a fun event for me when I have people to watch it with. The realization that there are millions of people watching at the same time, voting, having opinions..... I just love that.

I also love predicting what nations will vote.

Eurovision is a great contest, I hear that Romania, your country HorusLand is the favourite to win the contest.

The part where all the countries reveal their votes is the best part!. I really disliked last years winner, but it'll be interesting to see how Denmark host the show.

Where did you hear that?
Paula and Ovi got third place overall last time, though, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I would laugh a lot, though. Romania would go into debt. The show would be a disaster. :lol2:

I'm not sure if it will work like that, I believe they've changed the voting system now so that the peoples votes count more so than the judges. For example, Denmark didn't actually win the popular vote last year, but they won the "panellists" votes. But seriously Eurovision is awesome, and it's so funny here in Britain, we send forward a horrendous candidate every year, we come last, and then all the right wingers start moaning about reverse political correctness or whatever. :lol2:

I've actually heard a rumour than Britain might do well this year though.

I like Hungary, Belarus, Russia (The Russian version is even better), and some others (don't know them good enough yet). My home country Belgium has to perform tonight, it would be cool if he makes the final but the song isn't very Eurovision style. So I hope Russia and Hungary make the finals and get a high score (or win) in the finals!

Not as bad as if Greece or Spain won. But all I know is that poor old Blighty is once again going to fail miserably before the hordes of Russia and the 'please don't invade us' votes.

It will still be 50/50. Voters have 50% and judge has 50%

I just remembered that they can refuse to host. :p

I love that part, simply because I love data/statistics. Seeing any type of competition live is also cool. :)

Damn, I got told they changed it and gave the voters a higher percentage. :(

They really need to change the system, it's the biggest criticism of Eurovision I have, who wants a bunch of judges dictating who wins? It goes against the whole ethos of Eurovision imo.

Political voting would be on a whole new level, though. Voting fairly is impossible with or without judges.

WHAT'S A EUROVISION

*ahem*

Now that we've got that obligatory comment out of the way... does anyone know where I can watch this in America? I usually get all my Eurovision from these threads.

Nah. I reckon top of the second column or bottom of the first. As long as we beat France, all is good in the world.

Yeah it's a shame, the only good thing is it limits the political voting.
This is the voting rule for Eurovision:
Televoters can vote via the official app, telephone and/or SMS. The voting window opens after the last song has been performed, and ends 15 minutes later. These votes determine 50% of the outcome and are gathered by the EBU’s voting partner digame;
Professional juries are also required to vote. They determine 50% of the outcome.
The jury, which consists of five members (including a chairperson) is the same jury that voted in one of the Semi-Finals. They will watch live and rank all songs based on the second Dress Rehearsal, the so called Jury Final;

We won't. We probably have some fucking awful "musician" again, who has never touched an instrument in their life.

I hope Finland wins with a heavy metal band again :P

Finnish metal is a little bit frightening. And this comes from someone who listens to the likes of Iron Maiden and Sabaton.

Our song this year is actually decent. It's been on the radio a little, so I'd say we have a mildly good chance.

It's also AWESOME.

Though I did think that Denmark's entry last was good. Nice that I won considering it was about WWI and stuff and things.

As a Brit I will obviously support... whoever I think will win. Listened to Britains entry earlier and I will say it was certainly better than last years entry. The bookies in the UK predict a British victory. It'll be interesting to see how the ex Soviet states will vote in the light of the Crimea crisis and Ukraine's general situation. Also if Britain does win I wonder if that'll mean UKIP will get less votes in the European elections?

The UK song is anice song about peace and happiness. ^v^
The Finnish song is rock, but it's that boring indie-type thing. :p

I loved Lordi's song, though.
