Interesting to see that Russian televoting put Austria in third place. Maybe Russia is more gay friendly than you think. Or maybe Putin rigged it to show how Europe is degenerate and bad for you.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the first time France has ever come last.

Wow. Hopefully this won't be the start of a trend.

I guess the militant anti-gay thing is largely an establishment thing, a lot of citizens, especially the younger ones, probably don't care.

I'm thinking that both were actually well received by both the public and jury. I have a feeling the Neds got dissed too much by the self-proclaimed professionals on the blogs that we have a false sense that the Ned isn't that pops.

I dunno, the Netherlands was just never that popular in the polls or in the betting stations, it was always Armenia/Sweden/Austria that were being mentioned, even Azerbaijan got mentioned more so, there was a few brief moments where the Netherlands was mentioned, but that's it. So it seemed very out of place the Netherlands suddenly getting constant twelve's and almost taking it. I think It came off as more of a Juries champion than a peoples champion. Austria on the other hand always came off as a "peoples champion", but not really a "juries champion", so I was personally under the impression that Sweden would probably take the victory (Sweden seemed to be a good balance both ways).

Personally, I thought the Dutch act was actually awful, but that's besides the point. :lol2:

It was slowly creeping up with the bookies, and it was about third favourite going into the contest. I think that went unnoticed largely because Conchita got so much more momentum behind her after her semi. Sweden I found boring, to be honest - it needed more to get over people not wanting the contest to go Sweden-Denmark-Sweden.

Down with the jury.

Meh, the Austrian entry was okay, but it didn't deserve to win just to show how "tolerent" Europe is. Either way, this was a good Eurovision, though I didn't like how basically all the songs were in English. Bring back the native language rule!

Bearded ladies are probably still part of mainstream light entertainment in the parts of Europe that don't see Conchita as a beacon of LGBT rights (and don't see beacons of LGBT rights as a good thing), so she was onto a real win-win there.

The Austrian song was a good song, transvestite-sung or not. Although I do wish there were more native language songs...

And Ukraine didn't give it's 12 to Russia. Russia only had to make do with four.

It was alright. There weren't a lot of good songs in this Eurovision, no Alcohol is free, that's for sure. I really liked the Russian song, though. Or maybe the Russian performers

You know, I have to wonder, why did France do so poorly? France's entry was, legit, not bad. Hell, I'd say it was my third favorite behind Austria and Sweden. It was upbeat, cheerful, fun, and had a great beat (even if the lyrics were French); I don't get why nobody seems to like it, or why it did so poorly in the voting.

Beats me. I also expected Spain and the UK to do well. Hell, even favorites Hungary didn't do as well as expected.

I'm still upset Portugal didn't get through. It was the only one I actually liked.

Well there's the part where gay people frequently get assaulted and boxed out of employment and sometimes fucking murdered.

I can see how they might think they're unwelcome in Eastern Europe.

Erm...they finished below Ukraine and Russia. I know that.

Edit: Apparently Eurovision was broadcast in NZ for the first time this year. Great fucking advertising.

That's nonsense. Hungary finished in fifth, behind Austria, the Ned, Sweden and Armenia. Ahead of Russia and Ukraine.

The crowd started booing when Russia only gave Ukraine 7 points.
On a related note, the Russian media's reaction to Austria's victory was glorious.

I don't mean to threadjack, but people keep acting as if this is exclusive to Russia. I'm sure I could dig up a few dozen videos of LGBT people getting beat up in America/Britain/Germany etc. Don't act as if Russians are the only homophobes on the planet.

I don't speak Russian but presumably they're going apeshit about a transgender winning. Maybe they don't remember 1998...

Also, did you see one of my recent post edits? We had it broadcast here.
