1: He was bilingual, able to read both Akkadian and Sumerian, which would have been much more of an accomplishment back then.

2: After his death, his empire fell apart eventually culminating in a restoration of the Babylonian Empire out of a revolt in Assyrian territory. Ashurbanipal was the only reason his empire endured, and without him it fell.

3: His favourite pastime was hunting lions.

He was not just a lion-strangling, awesome beard-possessing, magnificent bastard conqueror, but also a scholar and one that contributed a lot to our understanding of his time and the time before it. In short, pretty badass.
