Even my conservative friends are saying the police are out of control.

Except that isn't all that gun control is. Gun control can encompasse many things including banning certain types of guns for little more than the fact they "look mean and scary" ie the assualt weapons ban.

I believe what youre referring to would more accurately be called "reasonable" or "common sense" gun control.

I feel like gun control is a rather vague word. By definition it's government regulation when it comes to firearms. So, there are a lot of people, including myself, who believe that there should be background checks, a waiting period, more regulation on guns like assault weapons(not a ban) etc. So, I guess I advoate common sense gun control.

So do I. In Australia, we had one shooting like Sandy Hook, and just decided that guns were evil, and now you need to be a hunter or sport-player to get something as measly as a lever-action or break-action. That's a little too far for me, but at the same time, I think that reintroduction of those types of weapons might cause big problems, as we Aussies have a history of sticking it to the law.

I'm being serious. There's never any open carry demonstrations or anything here. Even our shooting club has kinda been slacking off on get-togethers lately... I see open carry every time I'm in the grocery store. Everyone's got a rifle in their truck almost year round. Guns are the norm here. Even the local cops would just "hey man what's that, that's cool". It's a nice place as long as you stay away from the small town gossip traps.
