Who Was The Greatest British Prime Minister Of Recent Times?

Postby United commonwealth of ayrshire » Sat May 03, 2014 2:49 am

So the question: Who was the greatest British Prime Minister of recent times?
If I had to pick one, I would have to pick Harold Wilson. He was the last successful true Socialist Prime Minister, he made the process of de-colonisation go much smoother when compared to France or Portugal, and of course the rain dance incident was hilarious.
So, NSG: Who would you pick?
Kalmarium: hobbits, the lot of them.
Arkolon: You better be as chill as Ayrshire

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a humanist.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a sensible realistic egalitarian with several strong convictions.

As much as I admire Clemeny Attlee, poll restrictions mean I chose to only include the last 10 Prime ministers.

I can imagine an alternate timeline where he is, and it does not bode well for the UK.

Ok, so UKIP would appeal to you. It also appears to appeal to many as a sort of protest vote. But the problen with UKIP is that they have no policies outside leaving the European Union. Until they enlighten us as to what they stand for, I don't see them as an eligible party to vote for in any election.

Goodness, how wrong could you possibly be there? UKIP has put forward a full manifesto at the last elections and intends to for the coming ones too. I'm getting tired of people saying that just because they want out of the EU that it's some sort of protest vote. I've voted Conservative for years, but the Conservative party has been losing its conservative values. UKIP has been picking up those values. I shall vote UKIP not as a protest, but because I agree with the bulk of their manifesto policies.

In answer to the thread question: Sadly no Churchill choice on there (get William Manchester's trilogy on the great man to find out more). So since no Churchill, I'll go for Margaret Thatcher. Love her or hate her, you can't deny that she was influential, strong, determined and stood for what she believed in; as well as dragging a flailing economy and country that was falling off the world stage back into one that played an active and powerful role in the world. Also she was part of the team who invented Mr Whippy ice-cream - so bonus points there.

I lean towards Churchill and Attlee personally. Not a fan of Thatcher. Not especially opinionated towards Blair, Brown, and Cameron. Not particularly knowledgable about the rest.

Harold Macmillan: Pretty good, started decolonisation and other such things.
Alec Douglas-Home: Meh. He wasn't really around long enough to have an opinion.
Harold Wilson: Brilliant. Probably the most progressive PM we've ever had in terms of social reform.
Ted Heath: Didn't have a great personality and was completely incapable of dealing with the strikes.
James Callaghan: Probably could have been a good PM if he was not dumped in such a bad situation.
Thatcher: I don't like her economics, but she did stand up to the unions and helped to defend the Falklands.
John Major: Meh.
Tony Blair: Nope. Hate the man.
Gordon Brown: Same as Callaghan really.
David Cameron: The economy does seem to be improving but I'm not impressed by a lot of his policies.

tl;dr - Harold Wilson.
