When their neighbours ban kebab, them Albanians will run into their bunker towns.

Is everyone sort of forgetting that he straight up banned typewriters? Cars, Tv, stuff like that. Forgive me for being cynical, but getting rid of a way to mass produce written material and increasing literacy rates isn't for the good of the people, it's so people can be given propaganda more efficiently

Literacy rates were increased though so I suppose the guy did some good. However, he did also ban a lot of trivial things apparently.

Yes, but who does that benefit most? If they can only read stuff approved by the Party, then the literacy isn't (probably) done solely for their interest, but for the Party's

He oppressed and killed hundreds of thousands, and forced atheism on the masses.

I think that was Ceausescu you're thinking of.

Only between 5000 and 25,000 were executed.

It's pretty obvious the guy couldn't have killed 100's of thousands of people anyway, the population of Albania back then was barely 2 millions, statistically it just doesn't add up.

The birth to death ratio under Hoxha was pretty normal, and funnily it was actually better back in the 70's than under modern Albania, which is one of the most impoverished states of Europe.

And, it looks like deaths went up considerably once his Party came out of power.

I'm pretty sure he did ban color TV's and Typewriters.

I had this discussion with somebody today and they were pretty sure it was Ceausescu who banned those things. Maybe. I'm not drawing any conclusions yet as Hoxha banned some things. Beards, for example, which he associated with Islam.

He certainly did a lot better running Albania then some closeted royal would have done.
