Uri, as someone who's studying medicine or has that intention, this advice sounds very irresponsible. The common cold, left untreated, can turn into bronchitis or pneumonia. Something that starts as the flu can be actually swine flu. Just staying home and having some ginseng tea isn't the best way to deal with a disease that can be potentially harmful.

I hardly ever get sick too. But I'm much less likely to die of a relatively harmless disease because my immune system is constantly fending off minor incursions, while I'm also much less likely to die of a serious disease because I be vaccinated.

Last year, my husband had an itchy ear. Instead of going to the doctor, a friend had him put hydrogen peroxide in the ear canal and then do some candling. By the next day, he had a full fledged infection. From an itchy ear canal to full fledged infection, in one day. He could've avoided it by going to see the doctor as soon as the bad itch started.

I'm sure you know that natural stuff can have serious adverse effects too depending on the illness. People say to use St. John's Wort when you feel down depressed instead of seeing a healthcare professional. St. John's Wort can actually hinder psychiatric treatment by exacerbating the effects of anti-depressants or canceling them out completely or making the treatment not work from the start.

hydrogen peroxide solution, is good for a once in awhile softening of ear wax. it is not going to do anything for an inner ear infection.

In the end, Uri, wheat I'm trying to say is that perhaps giving this kind of advice to people isn't good. Ultimately, it is up to them to seek help if they want to. I don't advice rejecting traditional medicine for natural stuff alone. That can have terrible effects on a person's health.

I hope you know I am not angry at you, just concerned.

What? It's not a bad idea. Medicine is quite nasty with ugly side-effects.

Sometimes, but only for the severe diseases that you really need medicine for. For more minor stuff you can just take over-the-counter stuff, which generally has no side-effects. Hell, I'm pretty sure that things that have side effects have to be prescribed to you.
Kiruri wrote:Even otc stuff can be harmful.

Nope.
Kiruri wrote:Always go to the doctor, even if you're a doctor :p I always promote the doctor. But there's no need to go to the doctor for a flu, or a common cold.

This I can agree with. you definitely don't need to go to the doctor for everything; most stuff can be taken care of with over-the-counter medicine, but you should definitely have regular appointments so that you can catch the really bad stuff early, and if you ever get really sick, you definitely want to call your doctor.
Kiruri wrote:I went to the doc. for my (still have it) bronchitis, it's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't take otc stuff for the symptoms, I'd wait it out. I'd take natural stuff first instead of medicine. Nature seldom has the side-effects of medicine

Natural remedies also seldom have the benefits of actual medicine. As for "toughing it out", all that does is weaken your immune system. The boost you get from encountering a new disease happens pretty quickly, and from there on you're better off treating it with medicine.

I know it so well.

Some people have a terrible distaste of doctors and just because they read something online that some claim, works, they consider themselves experts. It's like telling someone who just broke a leg that they need exercise. Or someone who is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis to go have a massage.

One might as well tell them to put toilet water on the scrape because someone said it works. (not saying you did this, mind you)

I know. There's no need for concern. People always over look the potential of natural medicine, remedies, etc. O/C always go to a professional if you don't know why you have a certain symptom or if you get complications or if you're just unsure. But there's no need to worry over every single little cough, headache, sore, or ache.
