Yes. Having both parents is helpful (as studies show children of two parent households tend to do better), but that does not change the fact that how you look, the color of your skin will affect how you are treated.

If in fact he was beaten up constantly for just being white and ONLY for being white and the teachers neglected his case then yes, this is against the law and professional ethics. Teachers and principals need to be the student's adult advocates while at school.

I would not have pressed charges. Would a child of mine tell me that they got beat up at school simply because they are of Hispanic heritage and that no teacher stepped in, I'd chew not only the teacher but the principal out.

Oh, my parents did get involved.

But the faculty would blanket deny having heard of it, then would promise to "take care of it" (spoiler: they didn't).

You needed to be pulled out of that school, and the school board needed to be informed, as well as the city councilperson in charge of that district, the mayor, and the news media.

EDIT- Fortunately my history teachers (neither of which were white), were the exact opposite of the rest of the bunch and in fact were pretty awesome. Thing was, nobody messed with me when I was around them.

There are African AMericans that do not face these problems while growing up. More then that, since he is in a single child household, it might be more difficult to tell what is an issue of race, and what is an issue of being in that type of household. (People still look down upon and degrade single mothers afterall).

No one is claiming minorities cannot be bigots. They are claiming that an aspect of racism is having the power to act on said bigotry. Thus since African Americans do not have the political power to enact racist laws and the such, they are bigots, not racists. I never really thought that the color of my skin would effect me. I knew that in some way being a child to a single mother would indeed effect me, but my skin color? No. I haven't been very sheltered, either. I just haven't interracted with a bunch of racist people.

But on a more serious note; I just don't see the idea of racism or bigotry as useful. Maybe it's because I never managed to process a rational valid reason for it when I was first exposed to it as a teenager when a teacher (who wasn't white) told me - and this is no joke - that I should go back to Mexico.

I quickly shut her up telling her she doesn't even know me and to stop making bullshit statements about me - yes, I told a teacher that, at 14 years of age, at risk of getting to detention for talking back to a teacher because she was being bigoted.
