Scholarships for African Americans

Anyone else notice that practically every college offers scholarships for being black? I'm white, where the hell is my scholarship? I deserve just as much as any other person. Opinions? I find it pretty racist.

When you say that, do you mean scholarships funded by the school? Many scholarships like that are funded by outside people who set the criteria themselves.

A few schools actually fund those scholarships, but most of them are in fact funded by someone else. Either way, it's pretty damn stupid. I'm proud to be white and I feel that if a black man deserves a scholarship for being black without needing a single bit of effort to get it, I should have to fit in the same criteria.

It is up to private individuals how they want to spend their own money. I don't know of any school that provides money to an African American without having other requirements. Many for instance require them to have a certain grade-point average. Others require them to be at a certain income level (making these need based scholarships). There are plenty of scholarships that are merit based that do not care what "race" you are. Try looking into some of those. There are also plenty need based scholarships that do not care about race.

Alright. Y'all have great points, but consider this. If I were to make a program that provided scholarships to strictly white people, chances are that I would be viewed as a racist, and would receive hell for it.

How about give free university scholarships to everyone, regardless of nationality, race, gender or anything else?
That would've been nice really, but the government isn't a huge fan of nice things, really.

Considering people here already complain about "free" lower education, free university education is not going to happen.

Aren't they throwbacks to another time when blacks were considerably more disadvantaged and required scholarships to get an education that have just been carried on?

Partially, they are also a recognition that even now race has a pretty big effect on income, as well as on access to good education.

Probably because African-Americans have a significant economic and social disadvantage and need equalization. With a society that is inherently racially biased, correction is not racist.

There is a specific number in some universities, mostly public, that require diversity so they offer aid to a specific race so they are more likely to join and the university can meet the gov't set quota of that race of people
