You can do genetic testing on pairs and work out combinations that are less likely to create genetic disorders. IIRC, the Jewish population of New York (or a different USian city, but I think it was NY) did it and managed to successfully eliminate a disease.

Still, that doesn't mean we should abort babies with genetic disorders, my aunt had Down Syndrome, she did nothing wrong.
