Personally, I do not believe that abortion is a good idea, and would never have one myself or advise others to do so, but I more strongly believe that the government does not have the right to tell you what you can and cannot do with your own body.

So shall we abort this one ?

We’re in the abortion phase.

I always forget whether it’s gay marriage or evolution next. I think gay marriage.

This one is more general/broad then the other.

Anyway, my answer is that I think it should be legal until around 24 weeks or so (when the foetus is both viable and starts getting brain activity (my figure might be a bit off, but oh well)). I wouldn’t encourage it though, and it’s not any of my business whether a woman chooses it or not.

Fair enough, and I agree with the principle of your statement. Before the fetus has a brain and neural net it cannot have experiences, hopes, dreams or whatever - and I do therefor not see it as a human. It certainly is human tissue - but so are hairs, skin cells and various other assorted bits of my body.

Out of curiosity, does this mean you’d support enforcing abortion? Or just that you’d encourage it? If it’s the second, then you’re still pro-choice.

What defects?

Yes, what defects, indeed? And one assumes then that Verzia supports freely available contraception plus comprehensive sex educations in the schools. Those will certainly reduce the number of abortions.

Y'anyways, I'll post a serious reply:

Abortion should be legal in the following cases:

-Endangerment of the life of the mother;
-Serious physical health risk of the mother;
-The child being the product of rape or incest;
-The child having an incurable condition that will most likely kill it within two years;
-On demand pending thorough psychological assessment (ie. how desperately does the mother need it) up to 10 weeks (this prevents backstreet abortions becoming rife).

Oh, and contraception is available and sex education goes as follows:

-Reserve sex for serious relationships;
-If you are going to do it outside of a serious relationship use contraception;
-If you are going to do it inside of a serious relationship and do not want children use contraception.

There are many other ways to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. Informal sex-segregation (for instance single-sex schools) and terrifying the youngins into obedience being two off the top of my head that were traditional in times past.

The people who you are likely to convince are not the ones you are arguing against. They are the numerous people who are just reading the thread and not posting, and often they may not be anywhere near as fixed in their beliefs as the debaters. My own views have been shaped by previous abortion threads, so I know it’s happened at least once.
