It's sort of like when your insurance company determines that, because of their new policies, you no longer qualify for your current rate. You may not like their decision, but there's no debating it.

I read they now call it a dwarf planet

Dwarf planet. Not a planet. Not a "minor planet".

Your dwarf planet can sit in the star forming booths but it can't sit at the black hole bar.

Yes, well, technically.

Postby Ethopolis » Fri Apr 04, 2014 8:16 pm

If you think about it as a venn diagram, Planets are one big circle. Inside of that circle is Dwarf Planets, so therefore, it is technically a planet.

Explain why 1 dwarf planet around the same size, and another one bigger then Pluto got labeled as Dwarf's, when they were bigger?

No, planets are not one big circle. There are eight planets in the solar system. No more, no less.

Be taught both sides? Should we also learn about all the historical theories on what blood does? If scientists say it's not a planet then it's not a planet.

Well, for us in History learning the historical theories on what blood does can be interesting.

I mean, it's how bloodletting came to be so popular.

They should just make it a planet again to make people happy. That's more important than some dumb classification.

It's a waist of time for scientists to talk about it though.

Eh, the sun has enough orbital pull to manage to keep more than 8 possible planets. Pluto, even if it is a dwarf planet, is clear proof of it.

Now, I am not saying Pluto is a planet, but what I am saying is that it has that ability due to the gravitational force it has.

Yes, it certainly is a waist of time.

I remember the last scientist who told me that, he had a waist that would move like clockwork.

Well, according to the definition made by the people who have both the knowledge and authority to make a definition, no. So no, it is not.

Yes. Pluto is a Planet. If Pluto is 2nd largest in the Kuiper belt, then why not classify the biggest one as a planet as well?

Because it does not meet the astronomical criteria that was decided upon for defining a "planet".

By that strict absolutist interpretation nothing is a planet. Luckily that's not what the phrase means.

Dwarf planet. Not a planet. Not a "minor planet".

Pluto is a minor planet, dwarf planets are minor planets. The term "minor planet" is a broad classification term which encompasses pretty much everything in the solar system which isn't a planet or comet.

That's a rather poor analogy. We can change the definition of planet with the stroke of a pen. If everybody wanted Disneyland to be a planet they could simply add "and Disneyland" to the definition of a planet and everybody would rejoice.
