There's differences across cultures in regards of family values.

For instance, my culture demands of me to be independent of money (or, in other words, financially stable), but to be a source of support for my wife and children and be the breadwinner of the household. It may seem sexist and illogical, but such is our culture in Latin America.

I prefer for a woman to be more independent with her money, more financially stable, and to have someone who can share with me decisions of the household, who isn't scared of making them when needed, even above my own reasoning if she's sure and right about her decision.

I'm guessing it's more or less the same with her/him.

To be sure that this is posted:

I do understand where Alex is coming from, now that she explained her family history in a little bit more depth (and the post doesn't exist from her deleting it a little bit afterwards).

Just a question for Alex: is it one of your marriage philosophies "You marry not only the person but also the family when you marry someone"? You don't have to answer, I just would like to know.

I understand if some people do not want to share too much about their families :p I'm just more open because I don't care as much; I care more about someone pinpointing my location.

Also, explain what you mean by "in a way".

I know what you're saying about Latin American culture is true. However, for what I've seen lately, things have changed a bit in more cosmopolitan areas. Although the culture puts a lot of emphasis on the man being head of the household, in every way, it seems this stereotype is changing. Slowly, of course, but there's been a gradual change.

OH yea, University and City culture is changing to a degree where we're not bound by that stereotype anymore. For instance, I know several friends from El Salvador who want independent women and women who don't want to be tied down so much to their husbands.

They still respect a man's decisions as per the culture demands, but some of us are more and more liberal in that we let women talk back and even to the point of them being financially stable women and educated individuals first, our wives come as a first only when they are around us; and they expect for us to give them the same quality of respect; outside of the household to be exemplary men but their husbands when they are around us :p

This reminds me of a funny story. The girl I took to prom's birthday is on March 15th, the Ides of March. I tried to explain the significance of this, as it was the day Julius Caesar was assassinated, which lead to a civil war that would eventually lead to Octavius (Augustus) forming the Roman Empire.

It went in one ear out and the other, and she proceeded to talk about the laughable sport of women's lacrosse.

I don't watch football as much (I watch both American Football and Football though; but only the World Cup on Football and Thanksgiving and the SuperBowl matches for American Football).

I find keeping track of current events is more important.

It is derogatory indeed.

I generally do not treat people like idiots just because, there has to be a reason behind it.

It is equally derogatory though when women treat men like idiots who watch nothing but football though.

In short I think the most useful advice I've gotten from my father has been: treat others as you'd like to be treated.

Sex is one of those things that, although there's some biological differences, in the end it becomes irrelevant in judging a person's character.
