It's a failure on the part of the Britain to integrate people. If they have their own separate communities with their own separate courts I don't really think they're embracing Britain or its culture.

Like I said, when deciding who does and does not get to become a citizen, we can afford to be picky. There is not shortage of people who want to immigrate here, so why would we want to accept those who will be unable to adequately communicate with the vast, vast majority of their fellow countrymen? For every immigrant you accept who does not know English, you are turning one down who does.

There isn't a shortage of people wanting to come here, most of them don't speak English, the vast majority does not speak English. In fact, I would go so far as to say that one can take in all English speaking Immigrants, and still take in lots of non-English speaking immigrants. There is no loss if we do accept an immigrant who does not speak English, but who has a better record than some English speaking criminal.

If we have found ourselves already accepting every single qualified, English-speaking potential immigrant, and still have room for more, then we can move on to the qualified, non-English speaking potential immigrants.

Mainly because not every single workplace in the US requires people express themselves in English only. As per the EEOC:

The EEOC has stated that rules requiring employees to speak only English in the workplace violate the law unless they are reasonable necessary to the operation of the business.

A rule requiring employees to speak only English in the workplace at all times, including breaks and lunch time, will rarely be justified.
An English-only rule should be limited to the circumstances in which it is needed for the employer to operate safely or efficiently.
Circumstances in which an English-only rule may be justified include: communications with customers or coworkers who only speak English; emergencies or other situations in which workers must speak a common language to promote safety; cooperative work assignments in which the English-only rule is needed to promote efficiency.

I deal with alot of Mexicans that don't /won't speak Enlgish.

That's kind of annoying, especially since verbal communication is essential in my job.

I have nothing against any Mexican or any non-english speaker.

But knowing the lingo of the land helps out a lot in life.

If I moved to a country that doesn't speak English and refused to learn the language I'd be regarded with a low opinion.

Hell before I deployed to Iraq years back we had language classes during the buildup.... and just being as fluent at a 4 year old was an immense step up.

So yes an immigrant should learn English, but shouldn't be forced...and vice versa.

Another simple question. Should Immigrants to the USA learn English? Should they be forced to take English classes? And who would pay for them?

I think that, yes, immigrants to the US should learn to speak English. That doesn't mean they can't speak their native language. Rather, it means they can better participate in the USA's economy. If you know a county's language, you have a leg up on those who don't. I would also make the classes optional, and paid for by the government.

I think I have established that it does have an impact on their ability to function in society. If you seriously can't see how not being able to speak the native language would be a serious handicap, or how immigrants who know the native language would be preferable to immigrants who don't, then you are not worth my time.
