I believe they should, it's essential for communication in the States.

However though, we should be learning second languages as well. The lack of teaching other languages in education has always shocked me. For example, the high school I teach at only requires two credits of a foreign language to graduate. After that, you never have to bother with a foreign language again.

So it's both ways, immigrants should learn English and we should be informed and knowledgeable citizens and know multiple languages besides English.

Yes, it should be part of the naturalization requirements. I would not mind providing government aid or English classes to immigrants to make learning English less of a financial burden, perhaps it could be funded by a small tax on immigrant's wages after they naturalize.

I think the language education is not really taken as seriously in the US is the smaller economic need for it. English is the lingua franca of the world, and most Americans (average Joe) don't travel or do business in other countries (and if they do, they're most likely to be using English).
